My Englishman’s Georgian-Style Dining Table is Here, For Real!

Hi Everyone,

Exactly one month ago, I wrote that my Englishman’s table was here. Well, here, meant in the USA, specifically, Atlanta. It wasn’t in my home yet. That happened last Wednesday.

Well, the guys showed up with the table. And you’d think for once, something could be delivered or installed without some sort of drama. Right? If something can go wrong, it will.

So, if you’ve already read part 1, please skip to part 2 to find out what happened by clicking the link below. If you’re here for the first time, or wish to review, please keep reading from the top of the page.

Part 2 Begins Here

Hi Everyone,

Okay, yes, my Englishman’s Georgian-style dining table is here. However, “here” means in the USA, specifically, in Atlanta, GA. Like my sofa, it was made in England!

However, I do have pics and a short story. It’s a good one.

First of all, I missed Anne O’Connor’s email asking if I could use the credit card on file for the balance of the table and the shipping charges. Unfortunately, missing emails is not uncommon. Anyway, I was all set to reply, “Of course,” when I noticed pics at the bottom of the email.

There were three photos of a beautiful dining table.

The only problem was, it wasn’t the table I ordered.

This was the quad-leg dining table, not the birdcage base dining table.

Oh shite! Don’t tell me I bungled that one, too. I was sure I had made it crystal clear.

So yes, I rifled through text messages and emails frantically searching for the proof that I had ordered the correct table.

After about 20 minutes, I found it all, including photos, and about a dozen emails back and forth that all said “BIRDCAGE BASE DINING TABLE.”

Natch, this was after I sent out the Hot Sales on Friday, so I had to wait all weekend for Ann’s response.

I spoke to Ann on Monday, and she said she had no idea why she sent those photos. She sent me the correct images, and here they are!

My new Georgian-style BIRDCAGE BASE dining table.

I asked for heavy on the hand-planing for a more antique look, and they did a fantastic job. Obviously, this is the table closed.

And below is the table with its two leaves.

God only knows if I will ever need a table this large. However, I figured I would regret it if I didn’t do it. Gosh, I don’t even have enough dishes to put around a table this size.

Oh well. We’ll just use paper plates. ;]

haha

Below is another view of the gorgeous cherry wood table.

I’ve always wanted a round extension dining table, and here it is!

What I adore about Englishman’s is that their tables are certainly traditional without the overly formal, too-perfect polish.

And yes, that’s a yew wood banding.

Hopefully, I’ll have the table before Mother’s Day. Cale is coming for a visit. I can’t remember the last time I saw him on Mother’s Day.

Speaking of which, have you seen the new Mother’s Day gift guide? I just added some new items to it and will add some more for tomorrow and Sunday.

Laurel, when will we see your window treatments and the Gracie panels?

Guys. Please believe me when I tell you that I am working on both of those things. First, my windows need to be fixed and cleaned. I have made headway with that and the Gracie wallpaper panels. Yes, I should’ve started on those projects sooner, but I am only one person, and anyway. Who cares? I know everything will get done.

I had my annual physical today.

Great news. My blood pressure was 113/61, total cholesterol 175!

The kidneys won’t get checked again until August, but I am feeling well and still going for long walks.

Well, that’s all for now!

xo,

Part 2 Begins Here

Sunday May 25, 2025

So, what could possibly go wrong?

It wasn’t with the table. It was our 145-year-old building.

There are two sets of double doors to enter our building. One is the door we enter through, that’s about 30″ or so. And the other door is stationary with a bolt lock. So, I opened the bolts, but neither door would open.

The problem is that the 60″ top was attached to the table.

Normally, that’s not a problem, because the tops are meant to come off. However, the delivery guy said they were told not to remove it.

Now what? It was 5:05 and I prayed very hard that Anne O’Connor, my lovely rep at Englishman’s, was still available.

She was.

Phew!

She said that it was fine to take the top off.

Here’s a short video to share what it was like, as it unfolded. You can hear the anxiety in my voice. I’m getting pretty good at editing the videos, but now I must learn to add subtitles or arrows pointing to things I’d like to emphasize.

Hooray, they got it through the door, and then the table made its way to its new home in front of the settee.

However, the guys had to screw the top back on which they said wasn’t easy, but they did it.

Englishman's table arrival

Here you can see the mechanism. This is an extension table. I’m not sure if that was the right decision or not. However, I figured if I didn’t do it, I would regret it one day.

And, here’s the table, in situ!

Englishman's round birdcage base dining table

Sorry, these aren’t the best photos, and one reason is that there’s no art, no styling, and as my sis pointed out, nothing living, as in plants.

She’s right.

However, the Gracie panels are scheduled to be installed on the 28th. That’s only in three days! The day before, they are coming to install the lining paper.

So, things are still happening, but in slow-mo.

You may have noticed a long brown box sitting on the floor when I was waiting for the table to come in through the door.

Those are my window treatments in that box. Please don’t ask. I’ve already spent hours trying to find someone to clean the windows, repair them, and make them burglar-proof. I guess I was hoping that it would be one company. But maybe that’s unrealistic thinking.

Anyway, I think the table looks quite at home. I was afraid it might be too big, but it’s not.

It’s my proper, English, Georgian-style round extension table! Dream come true!

Last year on this week, this is what I was dealing with.

Remember?

And then there was this nightmare…

My bedroom mill shop

Floor slant 3/4 inch

Haha! I finally came to my senses and had the floor redone so that it was level and tiled. I love the bathroom floor tile!
Wow! That didn’t get installed until August. I think that was around the time my neighbors were plotting my demise. I don’t blame them!

Well, thank God it’s a year later!

There’s one more photo to share. (before you get back to your shopping. haha)

George Smith Jules Sofa Legend of Asia Chinoiserie stool

I got down low, which is a good thing to do for interiors, quite often. The lighting is a bit off because it was such a dark day that I had to bring in a couple of lamps, or else the sofa looked black.

However, I promised a photo of the garden stools. I’m super happy with these beauties from Legend of Asia.

That reminds me. Please check out the all-new outdoor furnishings page. You’ll find a link to the stools on that page. And you’ll also find tons of gift ideas, including gifts for Father’s Day, that is coming up in three weeks!

And, also, there’s a special-edition Memorial weekend HOT SALES page.

I made some changes since Friday. One of them is a link to get 40% off an Ancestry.com membership. I’ve always wanted to do that. I have a first cousin who’s been raving about it for years. So, of course, we share many of the same genes and relatives, too.

Important: If you decide to get the membership, you have to click on the get 40% off option, not the 14 days for free trial. If you do that, you won’t get the 40% off.

And last, but definitely not least, is the fantastic once-a-year Visual Comfort Lighting Sale– 20% off of everything + FREE shipping! which you can find on the Hot Lighting Sale page. There are 90 of my favorites as well as the general widget of open-box specials. This sale is ending on Tuesday, May 27th!

Of course, all of my favorite vendors are having big sales this weekend; please check them out, and some of my favorites are on the HOT SALES page. You can also access the other Hot Sales pages, such as the bed & bath, rugs, and vintage pieces.

xo,

Thank you so much!

I very much appreciate your help and support!

  1. Laurel, the table is beautiful! I just wanted to warn you to be careful with the cachepot on the table! If the bottom is porous at all, it will in time leave a watermark on the gorgeous mahogany finish (even if there’s nothing in the pot). I speak from sad experience of a beautiful pottery tray (glazed on top but unglazed underneath) on my antique George III mahogany dining table.

  2. Of course there had to be drama! It seems that’s more the norm than not when it comes to anything home related, Your new table is just stunning, Laurel! It’s perfect in your home. What a long way you’ve come since last year! I love LizzyLizzy noticing the karate chopped pillows; I had missed that myself. Your answer gave me a good chuckle :]

  3. Your table is wonderful. The size is perfect. As usual, you nailed it! And the garden stools are lovely. Can’t wait to see further styling with drapes, art, the panels…
By the way, for some reason, I did not receive the last two blog posts in my email. (Not that I missed them — I start wondering what is happening in Boston and go to your website to see what might have been posted…even sometimes at 2am when I have awakened and can’t sleep.)

  4. Oh my, how perfect! Worth the wait!
I noticed you’re karate-chopping your pillows, though…didn’t you used to ridicule that trend?
Love your home and your sharing!

  5. The table is beautiful and the perfect choice. I’m really eager to see the Gracie panels installed!

  6. It’s beautiful, everything is beautiful, i can’t wait to see the gracie panels up.
Thank you so much for letting us live vicariously through you and your home.
Every day i look forward to seeing you and your home!❤️

  7. The table is gorgeous … looks like it’s always been part of your home.
And finally a closeup of the beautiful rug… thanks!
Please consider purchasing dishes (not too many) to coordinate with your table.
You’ll be glad you did every time you sit down to “dine” …

  8. Hi Laurel,
The table is beautiful. But I’m nervous about it being so close to your windows. Will the UV rays hurt it? Hopefully the type of finish that was used will protect it. A table that pretty shouldn’t be covered with a tablecloth.
I like how your dining chairs are close enough to your living space that they can be used for additional seating. I need a closeup picture of the little seat covers. I’ve been thinking of sewing one for a chair I have.
Congratulations on your latest addition. It’s time to host a brunch. Break that table in. 😂

  9. Laurel, the table is wonderful. It looks as if it were original to your lovely home. Love the blue and white planter centered on it. Have you picked out a plant for it – the light is perfect for one. Wishing you luck 🍀 with the windows. Nothing is simple these days – especially in the greater Boston area. Having my own issues recently in getting a window replaced.

  10. I have become enamored with your journey and the idea that you don’t “settle”. You take your time, evaluate, regroup, and move forward. What a great example for the rest of us! Thank you.

  11. Table is so rich. I LOVE the more deeply planed top, and have never heard of using yew. I picture you quietly sitting with it in your home, and then laying the side of your face down on it. I imagine it will smell heavenly too. Glad you’re feeling better, and have very much enjoyed the Spring photos of prolific blooming from Boston.

  12. Thanks to your recommendation of Englishmans Fine Furniture several years ago, I have a beautiful round cherry 60 inch dining table that I love. Englishman’s was wonderful to work with (and I’m lucky to only be an hour away from them)!

  13. Hi Laurel,
A furniture delivery is always so exciting. I can’t wait to see your new table in place.
In the meantime you need to come up with an equally beautiful centerpiece. My suggestion is a vintage cachepot filled with orchids.

  14. Laurel, both tables are lovely but the birdcage one PARTICULARLY! Esp closed. Not mad for it extended from the angle you’ve shown.
Great news about the improved health situation. May it long continue!
    Best wishes.
Thanks for sharing and enjoy your boys visit for Mums day.

  15. Great news on your physical! And you can walk ( love all the magnolia pictures!) … life could be worse, and you make it, for so many of us, so much better!

Enjoy the new table – it’s absolutely beautiful!!

  16. Hello Laurel
I have followed your renovation from afar (England) and am amazed at your achievement. You should be very proud. The English table is beautiful and will fit in so well. Your final project will have to be crockery to suit it! What caught my eye today was the mahogany table and chairs in the background at the Atlanta warehouse. They were ours! We moved two years ago and had to part with some lovely antique pieces as they were too big for our current home. They sold at auction for a derisory sum, in fact I was so disgusted I wish my husband had put an axe through them. The auction house told me that the chances were they would be shipped to the US where there was still a market. How right he was and there they are. I hope some discerning buyer has as much joy from them as we did.
    Isn’t it a small world?!

  17. Hi Laurel, the table is gorgeous! Looking forward to seeing it placed in your dining area. So many lovely pieces in your home – am not sure which I like best – the table or your new sofa or your beautiful fireplace. 😊

  18. I’m with Susan, I thought exactly the same thing. Are we missing something in your great sense of humor?🙃🙂🥰

    1. Hi Diane and Susan,

It is probably more difficult to see the difference in these images if looking on your phone. The quad leg four heavier curved supports and the birdcage has straight thinner supports, this is a lighter look. Don’t get me wrong. I adore the quad leg and did it for several clients. And while it would’ve been fine in my home, too, I think the more classical table is better for my home.

  19. Hi Laurel,
I’m not often envious and have nowhere to put such a beauty but wish I did!
You’ve worked hard and deserve to enjoy this treasure.
    Glad your health is good
    Blessums,
    Sue

  20. Call me a goober but the first picture of the dining table looks like the same table as the second picture. Am I missing the picture of the quad leg table? Doesn’t matter. The dining table is beautiful. 🙂
