Hi Everyone,
Today, we will be addressing an interesting interior design dilemma regarding doing a kitchen remodel in stages.
But first:
Thank you so much for your kind wishes and comments regarding the decorating problems post.
For many of these questions, the answers are already here!
What I recommend is using the search box in the sidebar (computer). Or, on mobile, at the top of the page (mobile), and do a query. I do this all the time, and it works!
Some of your questions would be impossible to address without seeing some clear pictures of the situation and surrounding areas.
To be considered for an upcoming blog post, you may send your dilemma and photos here:
admin at laurel bern interiors dot com. And also, typing is still difficult, and I might not answer even though I want to.
***Please note some parameters:
- Only one or two emails.
- Please know that your home might appear on my website as a case study. I do not give specifics for the location or your name unless you want me to.
Today, we’re going to focus on kitchen remodels and the subsequent questions a few of you had.
Due to my injury, it’s baby steps for me. So, if you don’t see your dilemma here, it means:
- There are already blog posts that address the issue.
- Your particular problem is exceedingly specific.
- I can’t give advice of any kind because I can’t see the entire situation, and my telepathic powers are quite limited.
- I’m planning to cover it in a subsequent post. The focus will be on budget-friendly kitchens, and kitchen botoxes.
As with other topics, there are a few posts already in existence. If that’s the case, I will link back to it.
Below is my crappy little kitchen before the big renovation that began in June 2023.

Yes, those horribly uncoordinated light fixtures were already here.

A very interesting question came from Megan R regarding wanting to do a kitchen remodel in stages.
Hi Laurel,
If you were needing to baby step through a full kitchen remodel or bathroom renovation but not moving any utility lines (i.e., plumbing, electric, gas), how would you do that?
We can’t afford just to rip everything out and do it all at once, but I want to be smart about doing it in stages. And I can’t wrap my brain around how to do that, because it seems like there isn’t a way to do it in stages and have it turn out well. Am I wrong?

Dear Megan, You are not wrong; you are correct–1000% correct.
Doing your kitchen remodel in stages is a sure-fire way to have it end up costing double what it would have if you did it all at once.
AND to make some whopping mistakes, along the way.
Plus, you’ll be living with chaos, filth, dust and disarray for how long?
Most kitchens take from 3 to 9 months, in any case. Do you want to live like that for three years? I mean, there’s pain, and then there’s giving birth to quintuplets for three years straight!
What I recommend is careful planning in advance and saving up for when you can do it all at once, say in three years, when you were planning to finish.
You can hold off on wall tiles and maybe a dishwasher, but otherwise, I strongly recommend that you do the project in one gulp.
If at all possible, saving your current kitchen cabinets and painting them, upgrading the hardware, will make a huge difference.
However, there are other things you can do either temporarily or permanently to make things so much better.
Okay, I spent most of the time heavily updating one of my favorite 12-year-old blog posts, which goes over many terrific ideas for cost-effective kitchen updates.
You will find a ton of ideas in the post below.
Okay, now for a bit of business.
My new blog model will be shorter, more frequent posts. I hope that most of you will enjoy that change.

This isn’t your problem; however, my business has been suffering hugely since my wrist broke.
This is in addition to the huge losses due to the fact that 80% of my search and Pinterest traffic is gone, and not coming back.
And yes, it’s 100% due to Google’s use of AI overviews instead of putting the search results up first. These drastic changes have negatively impacted every content creator who worked hard to grab the attention of Google to get those prized “above the fold” listings for relevant search terms.
The wrist is only making it worse, as I haven’t been able to work very much.
And, no worries if you’re not in the USA. My plea doesn’t apply to you or to those who aren’t keen on Internet shopping.
Using the affiliate links for items you want and need costs you nothing, but it very much helps to keep me afloat.
xo,
