The Perfect White Bedroom Paint Color

This week began with a splitting headache.

Too often I wake up two hours before my alarm because I have to use the bathroom. Well, I was all set to fall back asleep 30 minutes later when I got a text from Chris.

Good morning, Laurel; the team says that to their collective eye, there is no discernible difference in new and old colors in regards to the white bedroom paint color.
They are going upstairs to work in the den until you weigh in.

Blimey! How is that possible? If you missed the post. I had the original Swiss Coffee recolored to match the sample Chris made

So, without coffee and the aforementioned head pain, I pulled myself together to see the deal. I won’t go into all of the machinations. While there was a difference in the paint color, it was not significant, at least not while the paint was wet.

There were four painters, which meant every hour they were there cost me a hefty number. So, there was no time to lose.

I went back upstairs and got all the samples, the wallpaper, and the fan deck of off-white paint colors.

  • White Heron was too risky as the test sample was as cold and bright as I’ve seen in white paint.
  • White Dove was out as it’s too close to Swiss Coffee
  • Simply White has that passive pink undertone that pops out like a pimple on the morning of the prom, not that it looks pink. But my bedroom is at the bottom of a mountain of brick. And one side of the mountain is the church attached to our home.

It’s the bay, with both the window and door at an angle that exacerbates and reflects the pink.

That leaves Cotton Balls.

This is strange. I have many samples of all of the whites collected over the years.

The colors seem to have changed. Does anyone notice that, or is it only me? They used to be closer together, but now the differences are far more apparent.

Still, Cotton Balls is very much like Simply White, except it has a passive yellow instead of a passive pink.

So, I decided to go with that, and two painters left to pick up the paint at Johnson Paint, where I was two days ago.

I sent Chris a text, and he texted back.

I was going to suggest straight white to avoid the room’s tendency to distort color.

A lightbulb went off in my tired brain.

Before redecorating my Bronxville bedroom, I remembered the trim was painted plain white. On the can, it said n215-01. That no longer exists, but the replacement is now oc-151 white. However, it looked quite nice in my south-facing bedroom.

Above and below, in not-so-great photos from around 2017 or so, you can see the plain white trim. The bookcases were always that dark cream color until I had them painted in 2018.

All of the bedroom white paint colors are Benjamin Moore White Dove 0c-17. Yes, I know the bookcase looks different, but it’s not.

I thought Chris’ idea was probably the best, so I trudged upstairs to tell young Alex to contact Serge to tell him to switch to Benjamin White oc-151.

Darryl Carter endorsed palette Benjamin Moore paint colors

After all, it’s one of the 12 whites in the Laurel Home Paint and Palette Collection. And it’s also one of Darryl Carter’s colors. Or, at least, it was when Benjamin Moore was marketing a collection of “his” colors that were actually rebranded as standard Benjamin Moore Colors.

I’ve frequently linked to the post on My Knotting Hill, where the code is cracked to reveal the colors.

oc-151 also known as pm-2 is the color. Some people think it’s the lightest base with no colorant, but that’s not true.

Oh, hold on a second. There’s some breaking news from the primary bedroom suite.

It’s Laurel! Come in Laurel.

Thank you, Laurel. Hopefully, this video works okay.

Wow! Thank you for the tour, Laurel. It was very brave of you to show up without makeup. ;]

Anyway, going back to Monday, after I gave the go-ahead to get Benjamin Moore White OC-151, I had to take a nap, and while doing so, I had a vivid dream about the paint color.

Below is what the trim looked like in my dream.

nightmare (literally), well daymare as the trim was bright blue!

Anxious, much, Laurel? lol

Indeed. I’d say that’s a nightmare for real. Well, actually a daymare in this case.

I went down a little later, and the wet paint looked quite white. However, they were using their bright white light. It was so refreshing to see the muddy white gone.

Later, I came back down, and they put some white in the space on the outside of the panels.

It’s difficult to see above, but I cropped it so you can see it below.

That’s better. But look at that gorgeous paint job! Again, this is the Scuff-X formulation from Benjamin Moore. The trim is satin, and the walls are matte. Some of you pointed out, and I had read this as well, that the sheens for Scuff-X are shinier than in other formulations.

Please compare the difference between this and the paint disaster you may have seen in this post.

As you saw in the video, (if you watched it) the bedroom was painted today, although the primer is still on the panels inside.

I’ve come to realize that no white is the perfect white bedroom paint color. No matter what, the red will appear as pink, peach, or lavender in some lights. However, that will improve when the paper comes off the floor.

If the ceiling looks a little different, it’s because it is. It needed a new coat of paint, and I thought it would be better with a touch more green.

Italian ice green is a touch lighter and greener.

Both are beautiful colors on the ceiling.

Here’s the new bathroom subfloor shortly after it was poured on.

Let’s end with a prettier image of the white bedroom paint color and Italian ice green ceiling.

The perfect white paint color

I think this bedroom white paint color is about the best it can be.

Well, tomorrow is another super-busy day. The electrician is coming back, Gary, the floor guy, is stopping by, and then there’s the big move.

xo,

  1. I really like the proportions of all the trim details and panel sizes in your bedroom. They are very pleasing to the eye and so well thought out.

  2. Laurel Home Blog

Please forgive me if you have already informed us of a future post or another follower has previously asked you for a post of guidelines when planning to remodel a room or entire home. Your knowledge has been very helpful with DIY projects we have take on as well as working with highly skilled tradesmen on a remodel. I’ve been making a personal list of steps in building and remolding a house that I hope will help my children and grandchildren if and when they take on those kinds of challenges. I believe any list , guidelines or needs that should be addressed from your personal experience of remodeling will be a great asset to give them as well! Thank you in Advance!

  3. Dear Laurel, first, I hope your head is feeling much better. Second, I love to see you on video. I agree with Jennifer B Williams who said you were gorgeous without make-up. Also, when I hear you speak, it makes me love you even more – like I want to be friends and hang out (but not in a creepy way, I assure you)! Finally, I’m so glad you found a color that works in your bedroom! Everything is looking so beautiful, and thanks for the reference to Italian Ice Green; it looks lovely :]

  4. To Betty and Susan A – I’m using Firefox on a Macbook with an ad blocker extension, so I don’t see the video or link at all. What I do is either disable the ad blocker extension for just this website or I watch the video on my phone. I hope that helps!

  5. The whites and ceiling are lovely. Very soothing and beautiful. From here in the digital world, looks like you nailed it. Your level floor is a nice infrastructure achievement. Thanks for sharing the video. Good luck in the home stretch.

  6. Laurel,

I hope this space will be the soothing retreat you have been longing for; I think the final paint choices are beautiful! I may have missed it somewhere in a post, but what formulation or finish are you using on the ceiling? Would this be the same choice for every ceiling, or would different rooms require different finishes? Thanks and best wishes for moving day!

  7. If the video is not displaying, try a different browser. For example, it does not show up on my Mac with the DuckDuckGo Browser, but it does on Firefox.

  8. Want to call attention as we get older we develop cataracts which is the way we see color. It came to mind when you remarked that a particular shade of white paint seemed to have changed. No joke. Just a thought. Love your website.

  9. Hi Laurel,
If anything can get rid of a headache & help you sleep soundly it’s knowing your paint color is perfect. I’m so happy progress is being made.

  10. Hi Laurel! It was lovely to watch the video and see how beautifully everything is turning out. Your vision for the space was genius! And you are so sweet! Your voice is much softer than I expected after reading and savoring your blog (every single entry since you started it!)
I know you said there will not be a big reveal but I am so looking forward to seeing the place when it’s finished .
Thank you for sharing your masterpiece with all of us!

  11. Love the white, love the staircase, love all the trim work. But. Do you feel that the ceiling is casting green onto the walls? Before anyone comes at me, I love green. We are about to undergo a vacation home reno and I’m trying to get as much green into the space as possible so I’m not a greenaphobe by any means. But on the tour, I felt like the walls were reading a little green and then I realized why. Just my two cents.

  12. I’m blown away by the airy and elegant combo of the white and green! And what a great story, sometimes the simplest things are the best! I added White-OC 151 to my list of whites to try. And what a paint job, indeed! I am so glad you found this wonderful painter! For some reason the video is not loading for me, I will try later in the day (but I have an old laptop).

  13. Glad to see things moving along, the white looks great. I would have chosen a shade of blue for the ceiling, but then again blue is my favorite color. Hey everyone, go to youtube and check out Bunny Williams New York City apartment. There’s a lot of stuff in there, but still it is gorgeous. Have a nice day!!

  14. I’m trying to figure out why I never can see your videos. I never see any link or a place to click to watch them. I feel left out since I can’t see what everyone is enjoying. Can anyone explain how I get to them?

  15. BIG BIG fan of OC-151, no matter the surroundings it seems to allow for peace and harmony, clean and quiet. Your project is beautiful! So appreciate the vindication of how challenging each and every project is! Lol! Thank you for taking the time to share with us all.

  16. Methinks it’s a darn good thing you are a 6 figure blogger. There are so many contractor errors I had to accept so the costs didn’t increase on my big home renovation. I’ve moved on now but there will always be things I want to change in this home. Thank you for posting the name of your first ceiling colour. I love both of them but the Opal one really speaks to I love everything you’re doing!

  17. I think the white you have chosen looks beautiful. I think no matter which white you would choose, the colour will change throughout the day anyways. I love the pretty green ceiling! So happy things are starting to all come together. There is light at the end of the tunnel!

  18. Dearest Laurel, I’m a relatively new subscriber (within the past year), and I am soaking up every post with great anticipation for the next! I’ve only seen snippets of your face or small pictures, so I immensely enjoyed seeing you in this video and putting it together with the voice I’ve heard on other videos. You are GORGEOUS without a stitch of makeup, so never be ashamed of not wearing any! And your inner beauty shines forth! I was a 90s-era makeup artist for Lancome first, then Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, and it was always a joy to have someone like you to be my test subject (one with inner beauty, natural beauty, phenomenal skin and a smile that lights up a room!). May God continue to bless your endeavors while giving you much needed rest & peace. Blessings from your new friend in Oklahoma, Jennifer

  19. Laurel,
Not to change the subject but your staircase came out beautiful! You gave us a glimpse in your video and Wow! Please keep the live videos going. It gives us a better feel for all your hard work. All of us can’t wait to see the finished product as well!

  20. Extremely satisfying to see that bathroom floor leveled!!!! I think you have solved the bedroom paint conundrum.
