Hi Everyone,
Greetings from the Lake George region of the Adirondack Mountains in New York State. I’ve actually already been here nine days and will be spending Thanksgiving here too!
So, I thought it would be fun to do a little post about this exquisite part of the country I’m in, right now.
For those of you not so familiar with New York State, you might be surprised to see how big it actually is.
New York State definitely has all four seasons. And, the biggest city in the country. In addition, we have the largest park in the 48 contiguous states.
I know. I didn’t know that either, but the Adirondack Park, where Lake George is located is an immense 6 million square acre park in northeastern New York State.
Above you can see the large fairly oval darker area. That is the Adirondack Park.
Lake George is in its south eastern side. And while it’s nearly 33 miles long, it is far from the only lake in the Adirondack State Park.
In fact, there are more than 10,000 lakes with 30,000 miles of rivers and streams, and a wide variety of habitats including wetlands and old-growth forests. (via Wikipedia)
And, there are well over 100 towns and villages, with a total population of 132,000 permanent humans. That swells to around 200,000 during the summer.
The Adirondack Park was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1963.

A wider shot of the Sagamore Resort.
Bolton Landing, about a third of the way up the lake on it’s western shore is the home of the Iconic and incredibly elegant Sagamore Resort.
I hope to get over there some day. We were going to have lunch there, yesterday, but they’re closed right now.
As you can well imagine, this area being a summer-time destination, it’s pretty desolate at this time of year. While sparsely populated in the winter, the summer-time population grows by about 50,000 each summer for Lake George, alone.
Also included in the Adirondack Park in the north is Lake Placid and Lake Champlain which spills over into Canada.

Love this insta account by Briana Lyons. I think you’ll enjoy following that one!

The photo above and the next three were taken by me, yesterday when we drove over to the village of Lake George, at the southern end of the lake.
The original name of Lake George was Lac du Saint Sacrement. However, the English renamed it “George” after King George, of course.
As you can well-imagine, the southern end of the lake is mobbed in the summer. Not so now.
Lake George – November 2019 – photo by me.
It was freezing here last week, but yesterday and today it got well up into the 40s and as you can see with mostly clear skies.

They put this summer rental up as a last minute REDUCED price of only $14,400 – for one week! I wonder what they normally get for this place! It’s quite large so it would be great for a large family reunion.

Washington County is just to the east of Lake George which is in Warren County.
Another beautiful account belonging to a talented photographer.

Glens Falls is a charming town just to the south of Lake George and at the southern end of the Adirondack Park. We are just to the north of Glens Falls and east of the lake.

The first time I came up here about six weeks ago was peak season for leaf peepers. The traffic on the roads added a good 45 minutes to my trip.

Lake George was the subject of many artists in the 19th century. Many, such as this artist belonged to the Hudson River School of Art.
Above photo taken by me, today at sunset of our view facing southeast. My boyfriend is planning on burning that brush pile this weekend. No worries! Believe me; he knows what he’s doing.
Similar view taken a week ago during a mid-November snow storm. Even for up here, that’s early.

Hi Laurel,
Thanks for the beautiful post and congrats on your new friend!
Thanks to you we purchased the Brooke Sofa from OKL. Now I can get rid of my 80’s sofa. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!
Hi Laurel,
Loved the photos and even though I live down state, only drove thru Lake George, never stayed. I need to do so some time soon. Would love to hear the story how you met your gentleman friend. Happy Thanksgiving!
Laurel,
I know you’re stepping away from the comments section a bit, and I totally respect that, but I hope you read this one. I have been so inspired by your blog and, even though I haven’t yet built it, I have every intention of utilizing your knowledge to help me design and furnish the future house of my dreams. And I recently got a few steps closer: I gave myself an early Christmas present and bought your Rolodex and Paint Palette Guide, which are awesome! And then, late last night, I somehow managed to convince my very mid-western spend-thrift of a husband to agree to buying our *first* REAL (read: new) piece of furniture together (aside from a boring mattress, years ago)(and we’ve been together for 14 years!). And you know what we got??? The gorgeous moss-green Margot sofa from OKL. On sale and with the extra discount! The fact that it’s his favorite color surely helped, but I’m just so excited I had to tell you because you’re the only person I “know” who would care and/or understand 🙂 So Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, I’m so thrilled that you have a new beau, and thank you for being you!
Hi Mara,
While not answering every one, I’m reading them all! And, I’m so excited for you too! Please send me a photo when you get it, if you like. You can reply to any email you receive from me. Happy Thanksgiving!
Dear Laurel,
We love Lake George, especially the Boat House B&B in Bolton Landing. If you get a chance, go to one of the local pubs in Bolton Landing for dinner. Everyone there is so friendly!
How lucky you are to be there at this time of year. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
Dear Laurel, I haven’t written you in ages. Thank you for taking us on your beautiful trip though the Adirondacks. Being a “Florida” gal, I had no idea of the beauty of this part of our country. Just a little PS …I have found love late in life and I hope you do too. Everything is possible!
Many blessings to you and your loved ones on this Thanksgiving day!
Laurel, thanks so very much for the photos. Glen Falls is where i became a US citizen some 30 years ago!! wishing you a wonderful and tasty thanksgiving!!
Happy Thanksgiving and every happiness to you !
Largest public park in the forty-eight contiguous states, the Adirondack Park is a state park, not a national park.
I knew it!! So happy for you.
Oh yes, and thanks for making me aware of how beautiful it is in that area. My hubs & I need to plan a road trip.
Laurel, like many in your legion of fans, I feel protective of you and want only the best for you. I am a nurse in a family practice and whenever a “femme d’un certain age” tells me about a new relationship, I always feel compelled to provide unsolicited advice: is he kind to you? Respectful always? Honest? Pay close attention to your gut. And have FUN!! Thanks for this beautiful post. Greetings from rainy Toronto, where Thanksgiving is a distant memory, but Christmas is coming!
Happy Thanksgiving Laurel!
Enjoy your pumpkin pie!
Great to hear that you are having (another) time of your life – one that is so deeply and richly enjoyed!
Happy Thanksgiving and it makes me smile this cold California morning to see you write ‘my boyfriend’. Woo hoo!!!!
Glad I am not the only one that went antennae up when I read the first boyfriend reference, but then there was another! What a beautiful area – definitely need to plan a visit from the dry west coast. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you, Laurel! I’m a recent subscriber and I’ve enjoyed every moment of your blog! I absolutely love your sense of humor. Your eye for design is spot on. I know your Rolodex will be full of value and look forward to purchasing soon. I live on a tight budget so for the meantime I’ll rely on your insightful blog post. Thank you again for all you do! Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving Laurel. Up here in Canada, we have had our Thanksgiving already in October. My brother used to have a cottage near Lake Placid and we hiked a lot of the high peaks. It really is a spectacular area. Great selection of photos.
Enjoy your dinner.
This post was such fun for me since I spend so much time in the Adirondacks in Lake Placid where my husband has a business. The land up there is breathtaking, I am constantly startled by the natural beauty. In the winter the landscape takes on a different edge, a calmness which humbles one. And Christmas time, oh my, the town glows and sparkles. If you might be in the LP area, give me a shout and I’ll give tips on best places to stay, to eat, and to shop, and to relax! Happy Thanksgiving!!
Hi Laurel,
Thanks for doing for all of us who love design! I purchased you paint and palette collection last year around this time. I have not yet received my update. It’a possible that I purchased it with another email which unfortunately was hacked and I had to shut down. I would appreciate it if you would send it to me in the email provided above. Have a wonderful time with your family. Here’s giving thanks to you this Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving Laurel! Wishing you everlasting happiness! xoxo
Hi Laurel. Its been some time since I checked in. I am in Mexico enjoying the sunshine. Just wanted to say congrats on the relationship. You deserve it. Wishing you and yours a happy Thanksgiving.
Gorgeous gorgeous pictures!! Thank you for being my “tour guide” of such a beautiful area. This just made my list of must see places. Have a wonderful holiday with your loved ones!
Blessings to you Laurel ! 😊
This looks somewhat similar to my surroundings, albeit much further south. Laurel, you’re living the town and country life these days! Stunning scenery. Enjoy!
Oh, wow! These pics are gorgeous! Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful photos. Looks like a well deserved, magical holiday for lovely you!
Love this! What a gorgeous spot to spend with the ones you love. Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving Laurel!
While reading this I thought “how wonderful, I think Laurel has a boyfriend” and then you said it! Did I miss a post with details? 😍
As always, you’re inspirational!
XO, Ellie
Hi Ellie,
No, you didn’t miss any deets. And, I wish I could say more but I’m not at liberty. However, you can probably put two and two together if I tell you that he has a bachelor’s degree in forestry…
Rats! I was hoping there would be a photo of Laurel and the gentleman friend. See you at the opera.
Just beautiful Laurel. We have been to Lake George for two summer vacations over the last few years. The first one I hated our hotel so much I wanted to go home early. But we took a boat out on the Lake for a few hours and I fell in love. I told my husband and sons that when I die someday (a long, long time from now), I want my ashes brought to Lake George. I would love to have a home there, what a way to live!!! It’s a majestic lake. So happy for you and the lucky man that brought you up to one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Oh my. Just beautiful. Thanks for sharing, Laurel, and have a lovely Thanksgiving.
Happy Thanksgiving Sweet Friend! Enjoy every minute! XO
