What is the Hottest Decorating Trend 2015 That Is Never Going to Go Away?

Do you know?

Quite frankly, I could’ve just had you scroll through the list of posts because I dare say that there’s nary a post which doesn’t have at least a little bit of

In fact, there are so many images which I’d love to repeat but I’m trying not to do that too much unless I really feel that I need to.

Before I go on, I want to say something.

sorry, a little cheeky tonight. ;]

Today’s images are for the most part, young, fun, neo-traditional and on trend. Some are also unabashedly feminine. However, these are on-trend images, I really love.

  • Of course, gold has always been used for picture and mirror frames.
  • Accents of gold always warm up a room as well.
  • Gold is classic and here to stay, so don’t be afraid to decorate incorporating gold and/or brass.

A question that I’m often asked is:

Can you mix gold or brass with silver or pewter?

And the answer is, YES!!!

In fact, some of the most beautiful designs, IMO are incorporating both warm and cool metals. We did this in the Bronxville kitchen which you can find in my portfolio. It’s the kitchen with the pretty crystal light fixtures. However, there’s a lot of nickel in the room too.

Does that mean that you should start using brass fixtures and hardware for your kitchens and bathrooms? That’s a tough one because we all know what happened the last time we did that. However, today’s brass and gold is either straight-edged and modern or unlacquered and truly antique looking. It’s up to you. I say if you love it, then go for it!

Charming kitchen in South Carolina. I love this for an old home and the mix of gold and silver.

  1. Oh, I love the coffee table in the first picture which looks like a marble top over nickel. Any ideas as to who makes it?

  2. Love these elegant homes! Yes, gold is very much what is happening. I like to see gold mixed with silver to freshen it up a bit.

  3. You are amazing, love your articles fabulous advice and great punches of wit.!

My problem is that I get so many ideas; I am overwhelmed; and end up sometimes with changing one or two rooms only to admit by other rooms now don’t look right. How in the world does one overcome that impulse?

I have learned so much; unfortunately for my hubby we went to the paint, carpet and lighting store today.!!! Cheers

  4. Hi Summer,

That’s not my work. I wish it was! However, the color looks a lot like Benjamin Moore hc-172 Revere Pewter which is a warm gray and immensely popular.

One thing, I didn’t mention is that colors in photographs. ugh. 99% of the time, completely useless. I do color correct but I’m correcting to my monitor which is a macbook pro with retina display. lol What that means however, is the colors are extra saturated and they tend to go warm. On my PC everything went blue and purple. If something is going purple on here then I know its really off!

  5. Laurel- I love the last picture with the gold/brass mirror. Can you tell me the color of the gray on the wall? I am looking for something similar in my bedroom which has dark wood furniture with brass accents and tan bedding with navy accent pillows. I want a gray-ish wall and think this paint color may be ideal.

  6. I am SO glad gold (and brass) is back! Did it ever *really* go anywhere? Not for me… unless it was on those God awful framed shower doors. Other than that… this girl LOVEs gold and mixed metals!
    Love this post Laurel!

  7. Thank you Laurel for this blog on gold. I feel validated but more importantly happy because I like and have som soft gold elements in my bedroom.
Laurel, do you have an opinion on Teak countertops? Not on durability – I have a teak countertop in a hallway bathroom (with white fixed elements) and it is extremely tough. I mean for esthetics. Is it trendy? Does it hinder resale? Is it as pleasing to most people. Is it fairly neutral element around which to redecorate? I am redoing the master bedroom vanity area and am debating whether or not to use teak on this vanity countertop also. Thanks.
