A Home Party Room Design – No Kids Allowed!

Anyone born after World War II and before around 1975 remembers the days when many of us had to endure not being allowed in the nicest room of the house. The “dead room.” You know; the room that only came to life when there was Christmas or a Bris or Grandma came to visit; something like that?

And we VOWED that we would NEVER do that to our kids!

And we didn’t.

Well… now, there’s a new generation. They grew up having free reign of the house and now that they’re married with their own young families are certainly cool with giving everyone free reign. They use their living rooms. They use their family rooms— with their kids. But sometimes they want a space to entertain their friends or watch a more adult-type movie.

Henceforth is a growing trend— “the adult space.”

Some call it a second family room. Some have a second family room for their teenagers, and some call it a rec room or a party room. However, it’s very common for people to have two family-type rooms with or without an additional “living room.”

I’m working on such a room right now for a delightful young family in Larchmont, NY— The Finkelsteins [not their real name] are a delightful young family who recently put an addition on their mid-sized home. A “bonus room.” And this is going to become the new party room. Last summer before the addition was built, I did a home botox with Mrs. F to go over her plans. This was good because they are planning a kitchen reno some time in the future.

The only furniture in the room is a bar at the far end, but it sticks out pretty far into the room. Still, I had plenty of room to work with as the room is the size of a two and a half car garage.

My floor plan included a big comfy rolled arm sofa with two coordinating club chairs. Two slipper chairs and 3 occasional chairs. There are three end tables, a coffee table… Mrs. F loved it all right away. She told me that she wasn’t sure exactly what she wanted; just a fun, pretty colorful, casual room to hang with their friends.

An Adult Home Party Room.

So, where to begin with this home party room design?

Well, the only room that’s pretty much all done is the living room which is a deep, rich aubergine color. When I design someone’s home and I’m not starting from scratch, I take all the givens into consideration.

The new room also features a lot of big windows which look out onto the yard and distant woods. There’s a lot of nature around and green 6 months out of year. Green and aubergine look wonderful together. So, green would be the foundation of this room. I found a lovely print with dark brown, green, a warm, soft red, greens, gold and a touch of white. I think it’ll be an accent in the room.

The red in the fabric is a touch more orange than here, but if I changed that then the brown would be off. But anyway, this one fabric is the basis for our color scheme. There’s even some aubergine in it.

And here’s what I came up with. BTW, I did this board on pic monkey.

The fabrics on the upholstered pieces are not what they are but what is the fabric next to them. I’m seeing Mrs. F tomorrow and I told her I would make her a board and so I thought I would share it with y’all as well. We’ve already settled on some of this.

Well, I’ve more work to do…
