October 3, 2021 Incident – I Need Your Help

Hi Everyone,

This is very difficult for me. I’d rather that everything always be beautiful and rosy.

But, you know, and I know that life doesn’t work like that.

So, I’ll just jump in and tell you what’s going on.

First of all, I AM okay.

However, Sunday evening around 7:30 PM, I was anything but okay.

I had gone to the supermarket to pick up a few essentials. It’s an easy 10-minute walk at the most.

I was feeling fine and easily able to handle the weight of my two bags.

Nearly home and walking down Commonwealth Ave as I came up to Dartmouth St. I noticed the walk sign had just come one.

The next thing I knew, without understanding why or how, I realized my face had hit the pavement. Hard. I remember just before I hit the ground and the impact, but not the fall, itself.

Stunned, I immediately felt the gentle hand of a stranger with a masculine voice asking me if I could see.

“Yes, I can see.” but then realized that blood was streaming out of my nose and grabbed my mask to catch it.

Then, he said, “it’s okay, I’m a doctor. Well, a doctor of psychology. I could hear him, but I wasn’t taking in any other information, and then another man showed up.

This one was a neuro-surgeon.

One of them literally gave me the shirt off his back to help with the bleeding issue. Two anonymous angels who left in silence after I was in professional hands but helped me when I needed it most. So, so kind. I so long to thank them! I’ll never forget it.

Through those early moments, I still wasn’t fully comprehending what had happened, and I didn’t feel the lacerations on my face. I mean, absolutely nothing. The neuro guy took a look and said, “Yeah, you’re going to need stitches. You need to go to the ER.” I just took his word for it. I couldn’t feel a thing except for some pressure.

A fire truck pulled up and then a police officer to ascertain the situation. Then, finally, after maybe 30 minutes, an ambulance, two guys with a neck brace, and an exceedingly bumpy ride to Massachusetts General Hospital, or Mass General as we call it.

I had a CT scan which confirmed a broken nose, but nothing else broken. Everything else was skin deep, only. Thank God. I’m very lucky!

This looks worse than it is.

Finally, at 3:00 AM, a very kind young doctor arrived to stitch me up. Two hours, he spent examining my face, then about 12 shots of anesthetic, irrigation, followed by roughly 25 stitches.

Then, waiting to be discharged, I finally was allowed to have my delicious dinner at 5:00 AM.

my dinner 5:00AM - Mass General ER

I also investigated the damage for the first time.

The novocaine, wearing off and then I began feeling the pain. Fortunately, Tylenol is all I’ve needed, and haven’t had any for 12 hours now.

That black eye is REALLY black now, and super swollen. However, all of the swelling is beginning to subside and all things considered, I’m not doing too badly.

44 hours later after the fall

See? I took this at about 4:00 PM today.

Okay, dim front lighting against a stronger backlight is helping, as is walking 200 feet to the DryBar and getting my hair washed and dried. :]

Yes, I’m wearing lipstick, because I believe that a balanced face is just as important as a balanced interior. lol The “eye make-up” is courtesy of the fall. Yes, I realize my face looks a bit droopy. It was worse two nights ago. That’s because my left side (your right) took the brunt of the fall, along with my broken eyeglasses.

I did not have a stroke.

Please know, I’m not so idiotic that I’m going to put together a (real) blog post and pretend that everything’s normal.

It’s not normal and hasn’t been for quite some time.

While I ADORE my new life in Boston and my new home, I have been aware for weeks that I’m on the verge of burnout.

Or, maybe I’m deluding myself.

I AM burned out.

And I’m not saying that to get sympathy.

But, I do need more help and more time off– somehow, without sacrificing “air time for the blog.” I could forego maybe one post a month.

However, please respect the types of things I prefer not to hear.

  • NO Medical Advice, and I mean that. I have a SUPERB doctor at Mass. General and have already been in touch with her.
  • Admonitions, like “you need to be more careful.” (I was careful) “Maybe you shouldn’t go out at night.” There’s nothing wrong with my eyes.
  • You really MUST put in an elevator.  (Impossible, and even if it wasn’t, the stairs are helping to keep my legs nice and strong.)
  • Questions about your individual decorating problems– unless you’re willing to send in photos and have your issue maybe appear on the blog.
  • Oh, take a month off.

This website/blog is my livelihood.

So, please remember that my goal is to have a profitable business without ending up in the hospital, as has happened a couple of times before. However, the last time was this time.

Oh, wait no. That was the first time, and this was the last time in June 2018.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m more grateful than I can express for each of you who reads this blog, offers support, friendship, purchases my rockin’ interior design guides, purchases items from the HOT SALES and other links, and much more!

In fact, without all of you, there would be no blog.

I daresay I would still be a so-so interior designer struggling to make ends meet. If no one had been reading this blog, I’m sure I would’ve thrown in the towel years ago.

Okay, I have to admit. I’m tired. I wasn’t going to write much, and here I am at nearly 1000 words.

Thank you, and much love to all of you!

xoxo,

PS: Please check out the newly updated HOT SALES!

  2. God bless your soul Laurel! It is so great to know that you are okay & are still just as witty as ever!

Good for you for posting the *real* real and for acknowledging the need to take time for yourself! 💕

  3. Estimada Señora :
Le deseo una pronta recuperación y seguiremos con todo interés sus blogs y también nos podremos acostumbrar a un blog mensual para aliviar su exceso de trabajo

  4. Oh no, I’m so sorry that you were injured. I hope that you are on the mend now. I really appreciate your blog and your sense of humour. I often think of you when I’m studying as I am leaving interior design in Australia. Thank you very much for your hard work in making this blog. Sending healing energy to you

  5. Oh MY! I can’t imagine the pain you were in. Sending good thoughts and prayers for complete recovery.
I thoroughly enjoy your posts. (Well, this one brought out different feelings than your regular ones. 🙂

  6. My new motto is s$;t happens; sorry it happened to you. My son had the same black eye. Went around the house yelling “Stella”. Quick recovery!

  7. Dang, Laurel, that’s a wicked shiner. I’m so sorry this happened to you. I am really glad you were a few blocks from MGH. And I’m glad and kind of not even surprised that a random, passing neurosurgeon was there to help you. That’s some pretty Boston s*** right there. And Boston docs are the best–figuratively and pretty much literally. I’m sure I cannot help but I can tell you truthfully that I happily evangelize your products to pretty much anyone who utters the words “paint” or “house” or “style” within earshot of me (or types them in a work chat). 🙂 I hope some of them have bought your guides or subscribed to the blog. And about that burnout…I know it’s really, really hard. It’s a lot. And a lot of us are sort of there with you in anonymous solidarity and empathy as women forging our own uncommon paths. I’m glad you’ve stuck with the blog–jeez, you pretty much knocked it out of the park! Speaking personally, your knowledge, willingness to share, and ability to explain have made an absolutely tangible impact on the aesthetics and renovation of my family’s home. We’ve made so much progress on our wild old house, and it has been very much informed and influenced by your writing. Thank you. I’m so glad I found your blog. And I hope you are feeling better and better, and send you sincere wishes for a full and speedy recovery. -Jen

  8. Oh Laurel–so, so sorry to read this! I hope you are healing quickly–you are one amazing woman–talented, intelligent and pretty. Know that you have a huge fan base–and we are all pulling for you to feel better soon…love and hugs from Florida!

  9. I just want to echo the warm, caring, and wise words of your legion of friends/blog readers. You are loved by so many; we’re here for you.

  10. Ouch! Sorry you fell and got hurt. I’ve been there done that! Love following your Blog. You make me smile with your sense of humor. So nice of you to post pictures of the streets in your new neighborhood. I have
always wanted to visit Boston. Take care !

    Kitty

  11. Oh, Lauren, I was SO sorry to see this! I’ve been a bit overwhelmed taking care of my parents lately and had gotten behind on reading your blog! Prayers for you to have a swift recovery.

I must also tell you THANK you for all of your instructions in your blog. FINALLY, I summoned the courage to order and hang (uhm, Hubby hung them!) draperies in my dining room. Because of you, I knew what rods to buy and how to hang them.

  12. Your advice is always so very sage and on point and your always make me laugh . . . thank you for all your gifts . . . and wishing you the quickest of recoveries!

  13. Well hells bells.
I was just out of town for a few days, and while I was gone you’re having all this crazy stuff happening.

That looks like it hurt and hurts now too.

    Take the time off Laurel.
We will all be here whenever or however you decide to how you’ll come back with some balance.

No pun intended, sending healing wishes girlie.

  14. Laurel! I am so sorry!

I don’t pretend to know how the blogging business works, but I feel like we’d all still be here even if there were fewer posts.

I mean, you post a LOT and your post are content heavy. They must take a lot of time.

  15. Oh, Laurel! I’ve just been catching up with my email and saw your “accident” post. I’m so glad that the two Good Samaritans saw your situation and helped. There are good & kind people in the world (I have been the recipient of kindness of strangers, too). Take care of yourself, and let your body mend properly – we will be here when you are better!

P.S: I love your blog. I have used your advice several times, and the “333 Hard to Find Decorating Rules & Tips” is fabulous!

  16. Take some down time! We’re not going anywhere!! Please take care of yourself…sending good thoughts and prayers.

  17. Oh Laurel, I really looove coming to hear what you have to say and appreciate your openness. I am sending lots of good vibes your way and hoping that you get what you need to deal with the burnout.

  18. I wish I was there to give you a hug, bring you flowers and some homemade soup. You are a smart woman and will figure it all out, no doubt. Wishes for a speedy recovery from Bluffton, SC.

  19. I’m sorry that I didn’t get to your Wednesday column until today-busy week, but nothing compared to yours. I’m so sorry to hear about your accident, but happy to hear about the good Samaritans and how well you are recovering. Everyone is right-you look fabulous for what you went through!
I fell @ 5 feet from a stage onto a concrete floor a few years ago and landed on my face. (Yes, fellow former dancer, haha!) I needed about 50 stitches, and looked much worse than you. The good news: now you’d need a magnifying glass to see where they did all the work on my face. Yours will heal as well or better than mine, I’m sure.
Love your posts, but happy to wait while you recover. Blessings and peace to you, Laurel.

  20. So very sorry. Holding good thoughts for you. Must let you know, you are not now and never have been a so-so designer. Your design work is top notch, so much better than most of that I see published. And you continue to not only inspire, but also inform, honestly. Please do take the time you need to take care of yourself. I rejoice in your success and want only the best for you.

  21. Laurel,
You look lovely with the added eye color and puffy nose. Be gentle on yourself. I have been a huge fan who often feels overwhelmed with trying to decorate my home. I take on big projects like the Queen Duvet Cover I finally finished. Swimming helps keep my head on. I know you will feel better. When you write your book it will be a smash.
    Best

  22. Hi Laurel, I love your blog! I enjoy reading it so much because you write like you talk (I imagine)!
Just wanted to let you know that I have found the most wonderful show on the Discovery + channel.
You may have seen it, but in case you haven’t, it’s called For the Love of Kitchens
All about the deVol company & how they make their products!!
It’s so interesting & I know you love their work. My husband has been drawn in also!
We love handcrafted things. I even looked up prices on their website for the cabinet hardware they make! I can afford those, if not a whole kitchen! Lol
    Keep up the good work!

  23. Laurel, take care of yourself. Be healthy.
We want to find your slightly snarky posts in our in boxes when you are ready to write. Be well. We will still be here when you have healed!

  24. When I saw the post’s top picture I thought you were going to complain about the horrible drop ceiling and yellow walls of some doctor’s office!! I am so sorry this happened. I hope you are doing much better now. *hugs*

  25. I am so sorry this happened to you, Laurel. Take some time to rest! What a scary thing!
May God give you peace and rest as only He can! You are a special lady, with a great sense of humor, even after an accident.

  26. Dear Laurel! I care so mucho for you, hope you will find your balance soon. A post a week would be enough for me 😃.

  27. Oh Laurel! Just saw this. You poor dear. Take care of yourself and I hope you’re feeling better. I had my nose broken in a baseball game 25 years ago – stitches and two black eyes. Not fun and took awhile to heal. Thankfully no plastic surgery needed but I won’t forget the experience. I was a student and it was during a lunch hour softball game at work. I went to work the next day bandaged up and feeling terrible but I needed the money. I even had a nose cast and bandages all over my face. Hang in there!! Take it easy and heal.

  28. Laurel,
Take care of yourself! Praying for you and praising that your accident wasn’t worse. Good advice and humor is always worth waiting for! Take time for yourself!

  29. I am praying for you Laurel. I just want to tell you my experience. I used Dr Nordykes wound honey (manuka honey) on a wound and I healed without a scar.

  30. Oh no, Laurel! Praying for your full and speedy recovery. Thank you for sharing your struggles with us. As you can tell from all the comments, you are loved by many! Do whatever you need to do for yourself and know that we will all be here for you!

  31. Please take time for yourself, as stated, we love your blog and will wait for you!! I have learned so much from you.

  32. Oh my, Laurel. Only you can make that scenario an entertaining read! I agree with so many others. Take time for yourself. We won’t go anywhere. It will be like waiting that whole year in great expectation for the next Downton Abbey… I pray for quick physical healing and for restoration for your mind and heart!

  33. If it had been me I would have probably written 3,000 words about the experience! Sending big hugs, keep us posted on how you are progressing.

  34. So sorry to hear about your fall! I fell in 2008 and boy I did a lot of damage. However I’m happy to report that everything healed. Wishing the same for you!

  35. The angels were watching over you and I am sending prayers for a speedy recovery. I LOVE your blog and your witty humor and have been a faithful reader for many years. I’m a Wisconsin “girl” too and at Age 69, leaving the Midwest and moving to ALabama to be close to daughter and family. It will be an exciting new chapter in my life…and if you can do it, I realized I can too! Thank you for all you do!! And Please Rest!

  36. You look better bungged up than most do un-bungged up, Lady! Good to hear you didn’t have stroke, that you were in path of two considerate docs, and that will rely on your own wisdom for how to handle the recovery time. That means you are fully at yourself, fall or no fall. Best wishes for good healing. And just think: now you’ve had what amounts to an annual check-up.

  37. So glad you are on the mend, what a terrible thing to happen. Take care and feel better soon. We would be lost without you and your always awesome design advice.

  38. Dear, dear Laurel,

I am so sorry you had such a shocking accident! Simultaneously, how wonderful is the kindness of strangers, especially the two doctors who provided immediate aid! Sending prayers and best thoughts your way for healing and renewal. You are such a beautiful and kind person. We’re all rooting for you!

  39. Laurel,
I’m so sorry. I admire your transparency, humor and positivity more than you could know. What a story. Glad two strangers were there to help. I think you look gorgeous even with the black eye and stitches. Hugs for healing and rest.

  40. Thank you for your honesty, Laurel, and recognizing your need to focus on you. So many women need to hear this. Hoping for your good health and fast healing.

  41. So very sorry to hear this. You’ve been through so much and always pick yourself up. You’re an inspiration in so many ways. A smart, clever, hard worker. Know you have a world of people out here pulling for you. One day I hope to meet you. Maybe Marathon Monday?

  42. Laurel, long-time reader, first time to comment. I purchased your blogging guide for my daughter. Will get the others if I ever get enough time to work on my own house again (full time legal work) or even have time to just read your guides.
Your blog content and humor is SO tremendous, I have loved every post I have read since I “stumbled” onto your blog through Pinterest several years ago.
But I would really encourage you to take time for you right now. As much as I wait for your next blog, I can wait. You have so much great content readily at your readers’ “click on a link” access that we can continue to learn and be inspired from you even if you have to take some time to slow down and do one blog a week for a little while. And assuming most other readers are as addicted as I am, we will just dig deeper into your archives and click on the links we didn’t have time to link to when reading your latest blog. I know some of the shopping links no longer work on those, but the Lord will provide! Perhaps some of us can just buy one or all of your guides if we run out of inspiration.
Just so thankful for and appreciative of the tremendous content you provide us. I can’t even imagine the hours of research you must do to provide the amazing content you always produce.
Praying for your healing and well-being!! And being a little selfish with this comment, we all need you healthy!

  43. Dear Laurel,
Ouch! How scary and annoying. Sounds like a good time to catch up on Netflix movies, etc.
Thinking of you, rest well, be well.
    Best, Ellie

  44. Yikes Laurel! Your smiling pic – how does someone still look pretty after a fall like that as you have? We could start a Pic-After- the-Fall contest, and you would win face-down EVERY TIME!!! No kidding though – your beauty shows through – your humor, your drive, your talent. I too am self-employed and TOTALLY understand the need to continue to work through everything and anything. It is challenging and being completely dependent upon what the self generates is demanding. I get it! Two years ago I had the rabies series of shots, beginning below my left brow. My face looked similar to your, yet the show went on. I understand.

Bought your paint and blogging guides earlier this year. I’ve chosen colors for each room of my home purchased 12/20 – painting has commenced. When finished I’ll send pics as it will be FANTASTIC. YOU made the process painlessly beautiful! Thank you.

    prompt rétablissement à vous

  45. I’m so sorry to hear about your fall! Hang in there, take good care of yourself, and let us know what we can do to help! Have a contest and let us submit guest blog posts and then you publish your favorites? That may or may not lighten your load, but it would give us all an even greater appreciation of what you manage to pull off each week!

  46. Hi Laurel – so happy you can write about the fall with such humor. That helps a good deal while recovering. Unfortunately recovering from burnout takes more time than healing from injuries. It’s not easy but you WILL get there and be all the better for the journey. Love and prayers

  47. I’m so sorry! Honestly, if you just repost old blog posts, it would still be amazing! And, you are beautiful, even with your stitches and bruises.

  48. Take care of yourself, Laurel. Everything can wait, including your delightful, informative blog. All of your fans, including me, will be here waiting if you decide to take a few days, a week or more. You deserve time to heal.

  49. Laurel, you are the model of grace, girl. I’m not talking about the fall itself, but the hair and make up for a full reveal photo! You look beautiful despite your owie. And I love your frankness, especially about the burnout. I’ve been there more than once. You are a smart cookie, so I know you’ll start figuring out your path to a life without burnout. Since I LOVE to give advice, I’m gonna do that. First, I would also love to read old posts, just as they are. Lots of us have never read them, and some of us would love the review of information. You don’t have to repackage it. Just announce it as “older.” Second, consider a long-term plan to re-brand, bring someone else on board, and maybe even look at selling your blog in the future to someone as fabulous at communicating as you are…maybe a 10 year plan? Start learning about it early. Third, I’ll see if there is anything I can buy to help you right now. Fourth, lmk if you need some short-term help. I can do research for you or look for photos for you. Fifth, read my blog post. This is the first time EVER I’ve shared my blog with someone. My site was started from YOUR guide and I’m not quite done setting it up..so some of my posts are half-finished, but THIS one post would benefit you. The title is about being exhausted by paperwork, but really, its about burnout: https://www.joypomegranate.com/exhausted-by-paperwork-youre-doing-it-wrong/ Hugs and Love and Healing Light.

  50. We bought a 3 story house in March, both of us in our late
60s. Everyone said we were dumb. Well, right I could take them all on a stair run and win! I think it will help us. No elevators.

About your blog, you research intensely and deeply, I have to use 2 devices and rest after reading them. I can’t imagine how much time it takes.

I do have all your ebooks and they are very helpful with this new house, I highly recommend them all.

  51. Dear Laurel, So sorry to read about your scary accident! My heart goes out to you, and joining in with everyone else here to wish you a speedy recovery! Please take all the time you need to feel your best again. Remember you are strong and resilient! All blessings to you!

  52. I’m so sorry, Laurel. I wish I could help you somehow, but I live in St. Louis. Please be nice to yourself, and take it easy for a while. XOXO

  53. I am so sorry that this happened to you. Thank goodness for the kindness of strangers. I hope that you get the opportunity to thank them!

I love your attitude and look forward to your next post. You are fabulous at what you do!

  54. Laurel,
What a crazy and scary thing to happen but a true blessing to have 2 angels come to your aid and to have a medical team to take care of you. And your beauty and wit are intact!
I have looked forward to Sunday and Wednesday mornings ever since I discovered your blog probably 4-5 years ago. If you have to cut back for a while we will all miss our weekly doses of Laurel but the important thing is for you to fully recover. Be gentle with yourself.

  55. Laurel, I wish I could send you the World’s Most Delicious Banana Cream Pie. I hope you find the sweet spot between burn-out & success. Hugs (but not the squish-your-nose kind). And prayers for wisdom & strength.

  56. So sorry this happened to you! But an amazing gift to have the help you received. There is so much good in this world. You look amazing in such a short period of time. Hope the healing goes well! I will read any blog you write!

  57. Well, your hair looks great! 😘 I’m not familiar with a DryBar. You were very fortunate to have not one, but two Drs come to your aid. Looks very painful. I’m so sorry. Moving states/cities is ridiculously overwhelming no matter how happy the outcome. Hope you get rested, restored and heal quickly. God bless.

  58. Feel better. Take good care of yourself. Be gentle, be soothing. We, your readers, value and appreciate you. Heal well!

  59. I think everyone is so glad that you are OK! Prayers for healing and comfort during this time and you do really look great. Lots of caring love for you and when you decide to continue, we will be here. I so appreciate your design and wit. Your always such a joy to read and I look forward to it every week.

  60. I’m so glad you’re doing okay! What a scare. Thank God your guardian angels were near. I’ll pray you heal quickly! Thanks for being so frank with your readers. We’ll be praying!

  61. Adding my get well wishes along with everybody else. Take some time for yourself and we will all be here when you return

  62. So sorry to hear about your fall, but so glad the two men (doctors, no less)stopped to give you support. It sounds like you have a good attitude about it and the steps are in place for a full recovery. Hope there is a silver lining in this somewhere.

  63. I think Jemma’s idea is a valid one. Then, maybe find someone who is an expert in giving business advice to people who make their livings online. He or she might have some suggestions that you would find helpful.

Your readers don’t just value your design advice; we value YOU. We’ll still be right here no matter what.

  64. Laurel, I am so glad you are ok. Along with everyone else, I am always happy when I know it’s your usual blog post days. But regardless, I go back & read and then re-read so many of them! We built a house recently & I can’t imagine not having your blog & your guides to help us through it.
I can tell that you work hard at whatever you do and have a lot of fire in you. You’ll get through this!
Your blog is my favorite & please know that I will continue checking your site even when you take breaks! I’m sure others will too, and I hope that helps you in some way.
God bless & all the best to you Laurel!

  65. Angels are everywhere, watching out for us😇 Take good care of you! Sending best wishes for rest and healing.

  66. Oh my goodness I am so sorry this happened to you. Prayers for quick and full healing. Everyone here will understand if you need to make some adjustments to your schedule! And can I say, how do you manage to look so gorgeous with 25 stitches, a broken nose, and a black eye?!?! God Bless!

  67. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. I treasure your blogs and reread them constantly. As a former Bedford, NY person, I feel a special connection.
Sending you good healing energy and the will power to make yourself rest!

  68. Laurel, I guess you can now say you have “totally fallen for Boston”. er, sorry about that. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

  69. Dear Laurel,

Only you could look beautiful after such a fall. I am not blowing smoke. Your after pic is radiant!

I know how I would look: I would be green.

As someone who has fallen all her life, and paid for it with serious and disabling injuries, it hurt just to read about your hurts.

And as for burnout, I’ve been there and done that.

You need to find balance however you can. We will all be here when you are well again. I’d repost old posts as much as possible for the time being.

I will share with you an aphorism from The Tao Teh Ching: “Do less than you can, so that you will always have a reserve.” This has helped me cope with my “A” personality type for many years.

Mysterious accidents have a way of sending us a message. I know that the worst accidents I have had all share at least one component: stress.

I am undergoing huge stress right now as I relocate back to California (I practically kissed the ground when the plane landed!).

Today is the pre-closing, closing on my new home (don’t ask it will just hurt your brain to try and figure out why there is something I am calling a pre-closing). The house is modest and not your style at all. I am buying it because of the trees. Two are mature redwoods!! The corner lot and mature landscaping give the home the feeling of a bower. Everyone who has seen this house loves it for me.

Your voice is always in my ear after your teachings via this blog. I actually hear you speaking when I encounter something you’ve trained my eye to see a certain way. So, even though my new home has many of the flaws you have pointed out, I know my personal space will be more beautiful than it would have without your input (that strong voice in my head). This should cheer you a bit as teachers love it when students give them this wonderful compliment. I know this because I am a retired professor.

Take the time you need and do less than you can, always.

Hugs from the left coast to the right coast.

  70. Laurel; you are a lovely valuable person. Please get well soon. We adore you and feel like we KNOW you. Please heal fast and come back to us soon! ♥♥♥xoxoxo and go to that CHALET!!!

  71. You are loved here Laurel, as you can see by the 100s of comments. Echoing everyone else, I’m so sorry to hear about your fall. Wishing you all the best. P.S. Your hair looks amazing.

  72. Laurel,I’m so sorry to hear about your accident…I literally feel your pain as I did a faceplant on pavement about 5 years ago…Not fun, no broken nose, but did suffer a concussion, NOT medical advice , just rest, no stress, and I’m just gonna assume you had a skull x-ray for fracture

  73. What a crazy thing to happen to an amazing woman! Sending wishes for quick healing to my favorite designer. Hang in there, things will get better. I love opening my email and reading your posts, it sets my day to happy!

  74. Even though I am new to your blog, I have loved reading about your adventures and the good decorating advice that comes with it. Your sense of humor is priceless! Best wishes for a speedy recovery! Much love to you❤️💕❤️!

  75. I’m so very sorry for your mishap, Laurel, and wish you a very speedy recovery. Somehow you manage to look pretty even with the facial markings! I shattered my wrist in July and so can feel your pain. Stuff happens, and I hope you take all the time you need to recover and heal.

    Hugs,
    Ingrid

  76. Wishing you the quickest recovery ever, Laurel! So enjoy your blog and learn so much from your expertise! I too had a fall and to this day cannot explain how it happened. Happy for you that there were knowledgeable angels close by.

  77. Your wit and sass make my decorating life worth living. You are my sister by another mother, or however that goes. Oh, and I fall on my face daily – figuratively, usually.

  78. Laurel, so sorry for your strife. As an entrepreneur myself with no financial support other than my own income, I understand that fear. If I don’t work, I don’t bring in money to live on. It’s a scary thing. So as we speak, I’m clicking on your Amazon link and ordering up on household supplies I know I’ll be using in the next few weeks/months! Perhaps I’ll do a little house and Holiday shopping on Amazon as well. Just making sure I do it in the next 24 hours 🙂

  79. I’m a big fan Laurel.I get so much joy reading your posts. I was so happy when I discovered other crazy people obsessed with wall color. Made me feel ..not crazy. Along with decorating advice you’ve shared so much of your life with us. Please….take a long overdo break. Don’t worry we’ll be here when you get back.
    May you heal quickly.

  80. Dear Laurel, I am so sorry this has happened to you. To have two doctors help you within seconds surely means that you are being watched by a higher power, and to have access to Mass General proves it. Face wounds are the worst because we have so many nerves in our faces; I’m glad you didn’t have any dental damage.

I slipped on a a 10″ square of ice in March and completely shattered my foot. One doesn’t see it coming; bam, you are down and don’t quite know how you got there.

Would a go fund me page help you take time off? I cannot say that would purchase anything on the sales pages or otherwise, but I would be happy to help you over this hump. Your blog is very instructive and I have learned so much from it that you should be recompensed as a teacher.

  81. I’m SO SORRY, Laurel. Praying for you! And your comment about the red lipstick balancing is priceless. You are a gem.

  82. I know you said no medical advice but I did a faceplant myself a few years ago and Arnica gel was MIRACULOUS in speeding up the healing process. Plastic surgeons recommend it to patients so please ask your doctor about it. It is a natural homeopathic treatment. By the way best place to buy it IMO is Whole Foods Market. Sending good wishes.

  83. I’m so sorry that you are going through this. Accidents happen so very fast. I send healing wishes.

  84. I’m really sorry to read about your mishap!

Heal. Rest. We have a treasure trove of your posts to enjoy and learn from until you feel like writing again.

    Wishing you the best,
    Terry

  85. So sorry to hear you are having to deal with this; grateful though that it was not worse. I hope you feel embraced by peoples love, care and concern for you.

  86. Dear Laurel, Your blog is one of my favorite things. Like a child opening a present, I eagerly rip open your blog anticipating what wonder and joy waits within. Thank you for all of the work that goes into this blog. Take care of yourself. Do what you have to do for you. A little Laurel is better than no Laurel. Love and healing best wishes.

  87. You might’ve lost your balance but you didn’t lose your wit. Your wearing lipstick and your comment about it in that picture was so you. A smart person knows when to pull back, so go do that but please don’t go away. So very sorry this happened.

  88. Oh, Laurel. What a bummer. I’m so sorry this happened to you and I’m so glad you had immediate help. Take care of yourself in whatever way works best for you.💐💐

  89. You must have hit the pavement with a lot of force to do that damage. Did someone come up behind you and hit you or give you a shove? Get better – but – ouch!

  90. I am a 67 year old nurse practitioner who knows all about burn out. I actually love my work and love my patients, but the paperwork, meetings, educational requirements and long hours do wear me down. I have learned to “turn it off” a couple hours of each day and to take a day just for me. I focus on the help I am giving and the relationship I am building with my patients. It gives me purpose. So I keep working. Maybe I will go part-time some day soon, but not yet. You are in the same position. We readers know you care about us and we care about you. We look forward to your posts like a letter from a dear friend. We would mourn if you stopped writing this blog! However, try to find balance. It is so hard in this society, but work to live, don’t live to work. Spend time listening to good music, dancing, looking at art, playing in your garden, shopping and enjoying your family! Take time for you, then you will have more energy for the blog. I work with women who have breast cancer. Watching them face their mortality has taught me to value each day, to do what is fulfilling, and to care about other humans. Life is short.

By the way, have you ever thought of doing a blog post on mud room/laundry rooms? First place we enter and usually a mess. Ideas for laundry storage, shoe and coat storage, cat boxes, tool storage, hiding a vacuum and sports gear, etc. would make for a good post.

Take care, Laurel! Know that you have legions of friends out there!

  91. Sending you best wishes for a speedy recovery! I rarely comment but am a HUGE fan of your style, humor, and pluck. Please take good care of yourself and know you have legions of fans out here rooting for you.

  92. Laurel, your blog is an email I am really happy to see. If it doesn’t come quite as often I’ll just be really really happy to see it. This one was particularly interesting (but sincerely hope the incident is never repeated!) and judging from all the comments you can be assured there are many many others who love your blog as much as I do. Accidents happen in strange ways (I smashed my nose and blackened both eyes by planting my face into my truck’s fender in my own garage!) and I am glad you received help so quickly. I am trying to picture what the reaction was when you showed up at that beauty salon (I am assuming that is what a DryBar is?) post stitches and black eyes. Wishing you a speedy recovery and hope you grant yourself all the time off you need.

  93. I enjoy your blog and have learned so much from you. But, I agree with Jemma—post some “reruns” while you’re rebalancing your life. I’m sure I’ve probably missed a few and could benefit from a refresher in some areas. Prayers for your recovery.

  94. So sorry to hear about this! I’m glad there were kind people there to help you.
Please do whatever you need to do to take care of yourself and take pressure/expectations off.

  95. Oh no, I’m so sorry about your accident!! I hope you’re on the mend and healing well. Take good care.
    Tina

  96. Sending warm loving thoughts to you. Thank you for trusting us with something so personal and scary. You don’t have to soldier on alone. 🤗

  97. Love & prayers for healing from Texas. You are such an inspiration, and I hope you find comfort in all the loving thoughts that are with you now.

  98. Oh my dear Laurel, I am sorry that the sign to rebalance yourself, didn’t come in a more gentle way. They say “what doesnt’t kill you, makes you stronger”. Actually I can’t imagine anyone any stronger than you! So happy that you were able to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over again! Who else could look so pretty after taking a dinger on the sidewalk. Please know that I join all the others in their loyalty to you as an inspirational light (both personally and decoratively) in our lives. Restore yourself – we will be there!

  99. Although I am a loyal follower I never mind seeing some of your old posts. Why not do reruns for a while and then, when you are all better, run one rerun a month?

    Heal quickly!

    Jemma

  100. Lordy Laurel! Smooth, rapid healing to you Girlfriend. Had you been hit by a car or fell? Jeez Louise. I mean Laurel.
My husband did the same thing walking our Golden Retriever several months ago. He too had a broken nose, but bilateral. His glasses added to the forehead cut with 8 stitches. Glasses were destroyed. The Emma, the dog pulled up behind bars in the police cruiser which was hysterical except I knew this was serious and hub was on his way to the hospital.
I had the NP add a final stitch where I saw a gap. Yep, my husband is a handsome man…diagnosed with Frontal Temporal Dementia. I used a cell phone tracker to follow where he walked. His location had stopped where the fell occurred. I called him and a police answered. A wonderful ghost neighbor stayed with him til EMTs arrived. Still don’t know who she was. God does send us extra angels when needed.
I agree with you on time off. You are wonderful to read and we will ALWAYS be here! Burnout is not uncommon for many of us I will admit. I have had to understand I am better with my hub adding qualified help.
Godspeed Girlfriend. Consider assistance and heal well. xo

  101. Strengthen your quadriceps, the same thing happened to me. My Doctor sent me to a physical therapist and I was told this happens to women. Around 40 years old your muscles weaken and you have to do strengthening exercises. Just google the exercises. I wasn’t going to comment, but I had the same thing happen and it’s a shocking and confusing experience. Best wishes.

  102. Oh Laurel! What a mess life can be at times! We pick ourselves off the floor (pavement) & brush ourselves off & begin again. If you need some time to relax in the North Georgia mountains (at no charge to you) please contact me & you are more than welcome to come stay in our little vacation rental (chalet) for a few days to regenerate & enjoy some peace and quiet. P.S. December & January are pretty much open right now so you could pick just about any of the days. My gift to you because you’ve given me so many gifts over the last 6 & 1/2 years!!

  103. Dear Laurel, So sorry to hear about your accident. You have grace, gumption, brains, humor AND style. A most winning (and rare) combination, that allows you to do anything you set your mind to. Fewer blog posts would make the content even more valued. Perhaps, and I mean this with all respect, fewer posts could be financially compensated for by a contribution-opportunity link on your blog that allows folks to show their appreciation. I know I’d contribute. Getting ready to furnish a new house and guest house, and plan to shop your Hot Sales to make it all happen. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

  104. Thanks for all you have given me. Know, I will remember you in my prayers and postive thoughts. You are so smart I have confidence that you will figure this healing process out.Best wishes.

  105. Well, I must say your hair is gorgeous. And, you must have a great doctor since you really look pretty good. In a few months you will be back to your beautiful self. I live for your blog, so get well soon. All my very best, Christine

  106. Dear Laurel, Wishing you a speedy recovery and my heart hurts for you!! You are gorgeous no matter what!! Just a lovely and very funny lady!!!

  107. Just want to add to the chorus of well-wishes for a speedy recovery. You really do look amazing for what you went through. Good thoughts are coming you way from San Francisco.

  108. Wow Laurel! You are a real trooper, honey. You are the third person I have heard to fall and break something in as many weeks.

Prayers for a complete and speedy recovery and healing to you. You’re an inspiration!

  109. Laurel, I hope you are soon on the mend!! Please know that we all support you taking some time off when needed! Another blog I follow does a “look-back” post 1X month another has a monthly guest post. (Of course these might be even MORE work for you than your regular posts lol!). I’m sending you good vibes for to figure out the right path forward for you!! Just know that we all support “you taking care of you”!!

  110. OK I am obeying all your commands because you rule! Just know that yes, you take all the time off you need from my end. Also, I sincerely hope you feel better soon – you look really good, considering! (I like the lipstick by the way – you go girl!). I fell last year – tripped over my big fat old dog – and had to get a whole new titanium elbow. But stitches in the face, a broken nose – well, ouch. I am so sorry!

  111. Oh deary me oh my! Every time I think of your poor bruised face, I get a little teary. And a big YES to the idea of a Patreon account. I know you will figure out the new balance for your life. And while you think, maybe a sweet little kitten needs a home? Perhaps enjoying a nearby church or synagogue would feed your soul? We all love you, Laurel! I hope you feel encouraged by all the positive comments from so many people. Hugs to you from Alabama!

  112. Laurel, for as long as you blog, I’ll read every one. I have to say, even after a traumatic experience you still kept your sense of humor, and I agree w/ the others, even when you look like you’ve gone a couple of “boxing rounds in a rink”, you still look great!
    Whishing you fast, pain-free healing!
    Dee, aka (Damon)

  113. Please know U are a BLESSING to many! Am sending healthy feel good vibes your way. I don’t know if this is feasible or financially possible – BUT – I think you need/deserve a VACAY ! Someplace where you can totally UNPLUG – and rest, relax and re-charge your beautiful and humorous self.

  114. Dearest Laurel, No matter how long or short your absence, we’ll always leave a light on in the window for you.

  115. Your things that you prefer not to hear made me laugh. 🙂 On the stairs matter, I want to tell you of how I visited my 84 year old Godmother in Germany a few years back. She lived on the second floor of an apartment building. When we went through the building’s front door, she then nearly levitated – I mean she practically flew like some light hopping bird – up the stairs. At 84. We have re-thought this whole don’t-have-stairs-as-you-get-older advice ever since. Best wishes to you!

  116. My prayers today are for a good and fast recovery Laurel.
I am in awe of you for writing this so soon after – Could you even see with both eyes to type?
I too have taken many a fall forward for no (discernable) reason. To date my bosom has saved me from a full face plant ;).

  117. Oh Laurel, I am so sorry to read of your accident. I’m an avid reader if your blog but this is the first time I have commented. Major life transitions can contribute to burnout and sooner or later it catches up with us physically in some way (been there myself via a 3000 mile move, onset of menopause and my mom’s pancreatic cancer all colliding). Sure hope you feel the love and support of so many of us who are touched by your presence in our lives. Your expertise, humor and flair are a gift! Please allow time and space as needed to heal and ground yourself. We’re not going anywhere.

  118. Good morning!
Well, you are one blessed woman who not only had one BUT two Angels at your feet. Thank you Angels!!
Tell me how you came out of that AND still look gorgeous?
Please be kind to yourself…the new day has already started.
I will always look forward to your blog ..whenever you can do it.
    xo

  119. Glad you are on the mend! Take the time that you need. I’ll read your blog whenever it comes out. It is one of the best out there. Be well!!!

  120. I enjoy this blog & I appreciate the guides and advice but I generally do not buy items through it. Why don’t you start a Patreon account so people could support the blog that way? I would do so.

  121. I am so sorry to hear this! Your poor nose! I’m afraid it’s a common occurrence around here. I am glad you got such good care and wish you a speedy recovery! I was in your situation in March: a badly sprained ankle from a similarly dangerous athletic activity — CROSSING THE STREET in sturdy, low-heeled boots, heading to Trader Joe’s. (I’m assuming you tripped, too, and are past needing our standard lecture on sensible Boston footwear.) I was housebound or hobbling for 6 weeks, but I think you will be better in time to enjoy a New England October. I hope so!

  122. Thankful you are okay and for the kindness of strangers!
Proud of you for recognizing you need to make some changes for yourself.

  123. I love your work, your creativity, and your generous spirit and humor. I am so sorry this happened to you, but it seems like you were in the right place– “Only in Boston” would you get immediate attention from two medical professionals…

So it seems that there are two dilemmas here — first, you are hurt and need to recover (sickleave) and second, you are dealing with burnout, which, in my experience at least, doesn’t go away on its own (so need for a long vacation and probably some long term restructuring of your blog). So something’s got to change and you will need to be the one to figure it out. No worries about losing your following in the meantime, or with a restructured blog that leaves you more time for a balanced lifestyle.

I will say that I’ve always been surprised that you manage to do two full posts a week — another popular blog I follow does only a Sunday post, and that is fine, and always eagerly anticipated. Perhaps moving to once a week columns (after a nice long rest) would help? Again, best wishes, and hugs, and hopes for your full recovery, and we’ll all still be here when you are ready to come back.

  124. Only you Laurel can fall with grace and deliver such a warm hearted post, humor included.
The best part? The lipstick, you just don’t give up. I love that about you!
Enjoy a more than deserved month of bliss!
    xo

  125. Ouch. Road meets face. Never good. I love the matching 👄 though. Take care. I’m up for reading what you write whenever you decide to write it and push send.

  126. You are adored by all of us who follow you. Please take the time you need! We’ll be here for you when you come back.

  127. Oh Laura, I’m so sorry you fell! A few years back I was walking down Michigan Ave, of course reading an email, and took a full fall right in front of hundreds of people! Luckily I didn’t hit my face but broke my foot! I love hearing that at the right moment two earthly angels were at your side! Your writing always brings smiles to my face. You’re a very talented person. God bless and yes take some time for yourself! We’ll all be here!

  128. Laurel, I absolutely love when you tell us what NOT to say. To tell you the truth I always worry that I will say the wrong thing, so you take away that worry! I want you to feel loved and comforted by me (and all of us) who enjoy and have benefitted from your terrific blog! Get well soon.

  129. I can empathize with you about your accident. About 3 weeks ago, I was out walking my dog and I vaguely remember thinking “oh no, I’m falling” and the next thing I felt was my face slamming into the concrete. A little more fortunate than you, I needed no stitches. I’m on the mend and consider it a minor incidentt in the grand scheme of things. Hope you are feeling back to normal soon. And please don’t take a whole month off. (Lol) I don’t usually comment, but do read your blog and have gathered so many ideas and knowledge from your posts! It’s helped so much in redecorating our small little retirement home.

  130. My sweet Laurel,
I’m so sorry this happened. Were you hit by a car?
You never did say what caused the fall. Please take some time to recover. You deserve it.
We all hope for a speedy recovery.

  131. Best wishes for an easy physical recovery. Look for the Fox tv show, The Big Leap, a very funny tv series with characters you may recognize. I am certain you will find the “Laurel way” through this situation, whatever you decide is for your benefit.

  132. Oh Laurel- long time reader, first time commenter. I wish you nothing but a speedy recovery! I love your blog, sense of style and sense of humor!

  133. Hi Laurel, I am sorry about your fall and injuries. It was so nice of the kind strangers to assist you. I know that must be painful, but I am glad you were not hurt worse. You still look beautiful even with your bruises and stitches. I am sending you healing vibes for a speedy and complete recovery. Rest up and know that many people are supporting you in your healing process and need for a respite from work. Love and peace.

  134. Dear Laurel, you have given us so much over the years. Please take comfort in knowing that we want to help support you, and that we will not leave you, no matter how long you may decide to give it a rest. Best wishes for a complete and speedy recovery.

  135. Hello Laurel, What a scare you gave us! I am glad you seem to be doing ok–this seems mostly due to your resilient attitude. I echo all the good wishes of the myriad other commenters.
    –Jim

  136. Wow! When you do something you do it right! But I know that from reading your blog. Take the time you need to heal from the fall, from the burnout, from the move and life in general. Sending you healing wishes from St. Louis.

I’m really glad you are ok!

  137. Hi Laurel,
You’re quite a trooper! I love everything you write, and take away so much useful information from your blog. This one is no different. I hope your recovery is quick, and your lovely face heals well. God bless.

  138. Laurel, What a frightening and traumatic experience. Do take the the time and space to heal physically and emotionally. You bring light and joy in to this world. Rest, recover, and know that we are all with you. Sending healing energy to a beautiful human being.

  139. It’s a good sign that your great sense of humor is still intact! Sending a heartfelt prayer and positive thoughts for your rapid healing and recovery Laurel!

  140. Oh Laurel, you need a break! I’ve never posted a comment, but your design inspiration, recommendations, humor, humility, and innate talent has guided me on a home renovation (1928 Seattle Tudor) that wouldn’t be as beautiful without your blogs and yes..:I’ve purchased your lovey guides too! I’m that person with 100 cans of Benjamin Moore Samples and 20 Farrow and Ball samples and I still double check your “Essential Paint Collection” regularly. As a single mom of a 5-year-old and a beloved father who just recently passed away from Alzheimer’s, your blogs are a bright light in my life…especially as we live in my dark partially finished basement (did I mention I have a rescue Rottweiler and a spirited cat too?) to complete my remodel. Fellow Aquarian, I send you love and prayers from the northwest ~ you make the world a better (and more beautiful) place!

  141. Please know you will continue to be supported. Most important thing now is that you take care of Laurel. After a major move it takes a couple of years to completely settle into a comfort zone in a new location. You’re a strong person, but sometimes strong people need a “time out!”

  142. Blessings to you, Laurel. Rest and healing take a little time. With your wealth of readers and years of blogs, I for one, would love to re-read some of those previous blogs. We’re here for you and love your style and spunk! I can’t help thinking that when these angels and events happen, something else that is good will also occur. Hmm?

  143. Laurel, God bless you!
Sending prayers and well wishes for a speedy recovery.
As for burnout, I once had a design business in Middle TN. I was so over the calls and demands that seemed to spill into my home life, that I decided to opt for “early retirement” and travel with my husband. Wish I could say I regretted the decision.
    Not for ONE MOMENT.
That being said, we would miss you terribly if you made the choices I did. I wish for you a solution that allows you to care for yourself as well.
    Blessings.

  144. Sending you heartfelt wishes for a speedy recovery. Just want you to know that I’ll read your blog whenever you write your blog… and I’m not going anywhere. We’ll all be here when you get back. Get well!

  145. Wow, when you fall you go all out! I have been known to fall down myself, but I only broke my kneecap…the face plant looks pretty rough. Glad you had your guardian angels to assist you. Take care of yourself and take the time to heal…you deserve a respite.

  146. Dear Laurel, Thank goodness this happened where there were people to help you. Take all the time you need to recover and know that we will never stop following you. (Have you ever looked over your shoulder?) In the meantime, I would love you to recommend some of your favourite or never to be missed blogs while you take the time to heal. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Vicky

  147. Am I the only one hoping one of the two “Sidewalk Doctors” comes back with her groceries and makes her dinner?

    😉

    Hugs!

  148. A small black dog on a dark oriental carpet is a trip hazzard. Ask me how I know. My face survived and yours will, too, dear Laurel.

I am new to your blog and just adore it. Your creativity, wit and level of professional insights amaze me. Plus I feel you are a “one off” – you have a strong personal style and don’t blindly follow the crowds.

Best wishes for a full recovery. We are pulling for you!

  149. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Love and light. Your sense of humor and great attitude will help your recovery more than anything! As a decorator of 20 years and I think close in age I love your blog, sense of humor and style! All the best💕💕💕

  150. I wish you a very speedy recovery! When something like that happens to a woman living alone it can be a very disturbing incident. I have had long stretches of living alone. (I now have a very loving partner but he lives in Toronto and I’m in the Chicago area so we have times when we are apart. Border closures have been difficult) My 3 adult children all live with in an hour’s drive but when I’m really sick with a bad cold (or last year with shingles!) it reminds me of how fragile we are. So I want to send you very warm vibes to let you know I’m thinking of you.
I also am sooo happy I found your blog. I looking forward to reading it every week. It has really helped me define my style. With my travel bucket list stymied in the lady 18 months I realized all that travel money was accumulating in my bank account. Your blogs helped define the redecorating of my condo including a chinoiserie splurge. My biggest problem now is blending my partner’s love of “cowboy” decor with my traditional bent in our Toronto home. Oy! The pics I could send. He actually had a statue of a cowboy when I first arrived!!
Big, big hugs to you. And thanks also for making me laugh out loud while reading your yummy gems.

  151. Not saying anything on the do not say list! I’m from the south, so.. You poor thing! You have put on a very brave (bruised) face in light of what happened. Falling like that is SCARY and your body whole body can stay traumatized after it. I know bc I got confident taking a walk with my 10 year old who was riding his skateboard, got on said skateboard, lost control, rolled down a hill and face planted from said board. At least I knew what was happening and that I had done it to myself, and my house was across the street. Seriously what happened to you is really scary and painful – much worse than my incident. I hope you have a very speedy recovery, Laurel.

  152. Hugs to you!! Hope you have a quick recovery.. And please try to relax. It is OK. We will all still be here.

  153. Prayers for you. Scripture talks about how to treat strangers as you may be entertaining angels. Laurel, I would like to think it was actual angels who came to you. No,they don’t have wings.
    Love you and your blog.
    Rest

  154. Oh goodness! I’m so sorry you had to experience this and so grateful you had friendly strangers to care for you. The later photos look pretty good. While the lots of stitches may seem a little shocking, they should ensure a better scar appearance. And dudes dig scars 😉

Burnout only gets worse, so definitely take the time you need. But I have an idea! Maybe some of your blog “students” could take a stab at following your suggestions and show before, after, and detail photos and do most of the write up as amateur guest posts. Then your labor could be reduced to editing, tips, and wrap-up. You’ve done some posts like this in the past, so you’re the best judge of whether it would actually reduce your workload.

I’m hopefully going to be moving soon and will have a fancy big-city apartment to decorate, so I’d definitely volunteer!

  155. Laurel,
Best wishes for a speedy recovery!!!
I had skin cancer under my right eye and the stitches looked very similar to yours, I had to have a skin graft taken from my chest about 9 inches across to cover my face. Another type of skin cancer popped out from under where I had the surgery so 5 months later they took out the new cancer, they did a fold over of my skin so it would heal better. With all the biopsies etc I had over 60 shots in my face, I told my daughter what I went thru the first time, I geared up and faced it head on (no pun intended), but when I had to go through it again it was not a picnic for sure. They were both stage one cancer so I am sure lucky/blessed and you are too! You are alive and kicking, hang in there keep your spirits up, listen to ballet music or whatever makes you happy, rest, rest and rest some more! Godspeed!

  156. Oh, adorable woman! So sorry you had to have this adventure. Wishing you a quick recovery and absolutely do whatever feels right for you, we’ll stay with you!
Love that you are rockin’ the red lips!

  157. Dear Laurel- my heart just plummeted when I read your story of the fall- and then, seeing how badly injured you were, I was doubly concerned if you had enough new friends living near who could shore you up until you healed. You gave us- and I am sure- your sons- such bad fright!
You’re like internet family to so many of us, and just like in our own families, when one member hurts, all of us hurt.
I wish you speedy healing in mind and body!
All of us want only the best for you, and that means, supporting you in all ways possible. Hugs, dear Laurel..
PS You’re still darn beautiful, even with stitches..

  158. I was so sorry to hear this happened. You’re strong and you will heal, but DAMN this sucks! Off to look at the Hot Sales…hope it helps in a small way.

  159. I wish you a speedy recovery Laurel. Taking some time off sounds like a grand idea. You will not lose your readers Laurel. I think most of us are very loyal. You consistently provide us with very helpful, entertaining interior design advice. I’ve said it before, you are the only designer I consistently follow because your blog continues to engage.

  160. Bless your heart! I hope you have a smooth recovery and am so glad there were good people nearby to help you.

My mom tripped and fell a couple years ago while out for a walk; like you, her glasses were pressed into her face on impact and her poor eyes looked similar to yours. Everything healed nicely but it took a minute. Good excuse for some chic new shades!

    Take care.

  161. Wishing you a speedy recovery, Laurel! Thanks so much for authentically sharing yourself over the many years I’ve been following you. Great design and life advice from an inspiring woman!

  162. Oh how scary! So glad you are ok and sending well wishes your way! I’ve had stitches on my face as well and applying Vitamin E oil to the scar frequently once it is healed helps reduce visibility of the scar quite a lot!

  163. Oh dear GOD!!!! I am so sorry you hurt yourself. Speedy recovery, and you look beautiful in spite of the new makeup ❤ ❤

  164. Dearest Laurel, sending you nothing but heartfelt wishes for a speedy and painfree recovery! We will be here for you. I can’t remember when I started reading your blog or how I found it, but you do good work! x

  165. Triple OUCH!! First cudos for being brave enough to post the pictures. And well enough to post. The last time I had a bad fall like that – in Paris on vaca – on the way to dinner at the cutest bistro – I tripped over my own feet and went down hard on my knees and hands – I put holes in my jeans, had bad scrapes on the knees and hands – BUT! worst of all, I badly scuffed beyond fixing my beautiful Prada flats. So how did your shoes make out?

  166. I am sorry to hear this. You possess something so rare and wonderful. I have been following your blog for about a year now and have eagerly learned so much from you. The sense of humor you employ along the way is immeasurable. Your talent, attitude and sincerity runs millions of circles around other bloggers. Your attitude will get you through this. We all have had a situation like this whether it be emotional or physical. Those who haven’t, please spare me. There are reasons things like this happen. It’s life and you have touched so many people that I hope your recovery is swift.

  167. Falls are scary (I had one last summer) and often one isn’t exactly sure how it happened. Two detailed blog posts per week is a lot of work while also working on your new home. I am sure we will all be here no matter what you decide so you can get and continue to get the R&R you need. If I was close I would try making your chocolate cake and bringing you some! Take care and sending healing thoughts.

  168. Sending you a virtual hug and wishes for a quick recovery. You have taught me so much about design! Thank you so much for all you share. Your hair looks gorgeous!

  169. Good wishes coming your way along with so many who care about you Laurel. You are a strong woman and will soon be well. . . . .however please try to cut back a little while you rest and heal, and accept help from those who are nearby and reaching out to you.
    Mary in North Carolina.

  170. you have gone through this much of your life as a beautiful woman, and you will go through the rest of your life as a beautiful woman who had a bad fall once. having 25 stitches in your face is very scary, but you look fabulous. And yes, you might need to sleep more and make sure to hydrate and eat a banana every day. I am 67 and those three things make quite the difference. Maybe set a regular sleeping schedule?

  171. Lipstick and a black-eye. You are proof mid-west gals are tough. I’m sure you’ll push through and do what needs to be done. Do take take the time and care for yourself. You are a small joy to me and to many.

  172. I had a fall last year. I understand stitches. I am extremely glad you were not seriously injured. You take whatever time you need for you. ❤

  173. I’m so grateful you’re okay. Your audience (inclduding me!) are all hoping for your swift recovery. Glad you’re talking about burnout — in fact, over time, if you have any tips about dealing with burnout, many of us would love to hear more about that (this past 1-1/2 has been rough!). In the meantime, I’m thinking of you! Ann Wardlow

  174. I’m so sorry! I faceplanted on the sidewalk coming back from lunch a few years ago, and it was painful, ruined my Ray-Bans, and embarrassing. I think I did real damage to my nose. Then early in the pandemic I tripped and had a horrific fall into a bookcase face first. It will take along time for the swelling to go down completely, and you might have some numb spots for awhile. Gravity happens. It’s not a sign of age or any failing on your part. I will continue to read your posts daily, clicking on everything as much as possible, while you’re resting and recovering.

  175. The best advice I have ever read is “pull back until there is clarity.”

Only you know what that feels like for you.

Best wishes for a speedy, scar-free recovery. You’re still beautiful, even with the black eye and stitches!

  176. Thank goodness Laurel that you had Good Samaritans to help you. Please take care, rest and recover and we will always continue to support you. All the best, Eva

  177. Laurel!! Sending you prayers for painfree healing ! I can see all the “Laurelites” are sending you well wishes too!
You have helped me tremendously in the past and I am so appreciative.
    Pam

  178. Sending wishes and a virtual healthy chicken dinner. So sorry for this jolting painful experience in your life suddenly. Sending prayers that you heal faster than expected and continue having the best of care. Typical spunky Laurel that you were able to so quickly feel some perspective & silver linings amid the shock & pain.
Maybe if you can rest & write half as much, we can all open posts & read twice as much, will that fool the system & game the analytics? I know your other services must be in demand because it seems everyone is doing a project. Whatever it takes, we are here whenever you are and wish you the best.

  179. You’re a marvel Laurel, I’m wishing you as speedy and painless a recovery as can be possible. Thank you for continuing to post; your posts have been amazing lately, and I look forward to seeing what’s next! But sending my sympathies, it’s never fun to be injured, and you’re a trooper.

  180. Sending you wishes for speedy healing for your body and restorative rest for your spirit. R’fuah schlema.

  181. Durn, Laurel! You really took a header! It’s the kind of thing that could happen to anyone, at any time. Probably not worth analyzing too much, just focus on healing. Hooray for those angels that arrived when you needed them! I also know from experience that facial wounds tend to heal nicely despite the colorful stages the healing process requires. In the meantime, the hair is most definitely on point. Wishing you a very speedy recovery!

  182. I’m so sorry this happened. Please do what you need to do. Your well being is the most important thing, and not just for the blog.

  183. Feel better soon! I’m glad so much help was at hand. Love your wit and humour and happy to read at whatever pace you can churn out. xx

  184. Good healing to you, Laurel. I don’t know if you know but reading your blog is healing in so many ways! Your humor, your insights, your knowledge, your enthusiasm. You are such a gift. And my personal favorite: I would not know about the BM color Abalone ( in 3 different rooms now) if it wasn’t for you. Speedy recovery!

  185. Oh, wow, Laurel. So sorry this happened to you. I wish you a speedy recovery and that I could bring you the best banana cream pie that Boston has to offer. Take care and we will all be here for you!

  186. I’m so glad you are Ok. I am local, actually work at the hospital. Give me a whistle if I can do anything. I know how it is to be in a new place with few connections.

  187. Oh my Laurel! Hopefully you are healing!! I live in Boston (Seaport) and also single post-divorce, so I know what it is like to have little to no help at home when you most need it. So- email me if you need ANYTHING delivered or just a coffee/lunch to start on that relaxation plan. I recently created a new magazine called Extraordinary Women, so I know what it’s like to be totally in your head as you grow your business. Actually, I’d love to interview you for the magazine! Let me know- and again, email if you need anything and I’ll deliver to your front door. 😀

  188. Wishing you a speedy recovery, Laurel! I discovered your blog while decorating a family home in NJ long distance from Bermuda during lockdown and you have given me a lot of assistance (and laughs) in that journey. Please take care of yourself and your needs! Your loyal fans are legion and will be waiting for you when you are ready. Sending positive thoughts! Jennie Lee from Bermuda

  189. Speedy recovery to you! And don’t worry about the stitches in your face – they heal very well (unfortunately I know firsthand).

  190. OMG…get better soon. If I ever fall on my face and break my nose, I hope I have 2 angels to help me (and look as good as you do in your pic!). I only slipped and went flying, squatting and on 1 heel as I was holding a briefcase in Grand Central Station. 2 people came to help me up – and they said “You’ll never believe what made you slip – a banana peel.” I laughed so hard!

Be well! Have a speedy recovery!

    Linda

  191. So sorry about your fall! Please take time for you and rest – I will still be here when you return. Always enjoy your posts and decorating wisdom/expertise!

  192. So Sorry for your troubles! I’m a great cook and will deliver a dinner for you. Let me know what you like.

  193. It looks like you will heal up beautifully. You look great! But watch out for burnout. Balance in life is more important for your health than you might realize. Be good to yourself and allow yourself to heal more than from just your facial injuries. Feel beautiful from the inside as well as on the outside. This blog is wonderful, indeed! But it is more important that you feel wonderful! Be well!

  194. Laurel, so glad those compassionate people were there for you! Take care of yourself…your readers will be here no matter what so do what you need to do to take care of yourself.

  195. Thank you Laurel for having the courage to be vulnerable and authentic. It’s what many of us love and enjoy most about your blog posts. Prayers and best wishes for a speedy recovery. God bless

  196. I’m so sorry you’re hurt. Most importantly, take care of yourself. We’ll support you. PS: Your hair looks fabulous: )

  197. How incredibly scary — glad to hear you are ok and that strangers were kind!!! That outcome is just the news we need in today’s world.

First, remember that Mercury is in retrograde so I think we can just blame that.

Second, I know you don’t want medical advice so please consider this aesthetic advice instead. If the very nice doctor who stitched you up was not a plastic surgeon, consider getting your stitches looked at by a plastic surgeon! Makes a huge difference for the scarring, if you care about that.

Third, the first step is admitting you are burned out and asking for help!! So many of us are, and you are so lucky this was the worst that happened. I have heard far worse horror stories of the consequences of being exhausted. A friend accidentally killed her beloved dog by leaving him in a hot car (the ignition was supposed to be on with the A/C but wasn’t). Another friend’s kidneys failed and she almost died. And on and on…

Perhaps engaging a guest blogger on a regular basis could provide you with the rest you need while still providing your income.

    Take care of yourself!

  198. so sorry for the fall, you were lucky to have the 2 angels there when it happened. you need a vacation in Ogunquit Maine, perfect time to be here, not so busy, and just an hour and a half from Boston. the entire village is walkable!

  199. I’m so sorry this happened to you. Wishing you a speedy and complete recovery. A friend had a very similar accident: night, a bag of groceries, outside her apartment, no broken nose but deep cuts to her face; one right up to the corner of her eye. Point: she did not have a sensation or memory of a misstep/trip/slip before the fall, either.

  200. Sending you all my best wishes, Laurel, as you recover from the injuries and a traumatic experience. I can’t offer any practical solutions to your problem of keeping your site going and providing your income while taking that (clearly much-needed) break from it all.
I will, however, make you an offer: one of your readers commented on my comment about making custom cushions and asked for photos. If it would interest you and your readers, I will take photos (but I’m only an amateur at this) and write on methods and decorative effect choices for cushions plus a bit of how-to for you to put up on the site. If this is of any use, let me know, if not, do nothing!

  201. May God bless you with a speedy recovery & much prosperity, good health & peace. I enjoy your witty , interesting & helpful blogs so much ! But for now, please get lots of rest & take good care of yourself. 😌🙏

  202. Get well soon from Ireland.

Laurel, as much as we all love you, none of us are going to be there to pick you up off the ground if you fall. You need to take this as a serious health warning if you feel like you are burning out. Take the pressure off yourself. Your health is everything. You are supposed to be enjoying your life. Make some changes and we will support you.

    God Bless x

  203. i do hope you get better quickly. but being a born and bred, and still living here, bostonian i have to crow a bit.
as i am sure you’ve experienced, boston and its people are the best. i’ve read that bostonians are cold and distant but what you’ve experienced is what happens here everyday. and mgh is the best. take care.

  204. Glad you recognize your need to take things slower.
I have learned so much from you over the years so we must keep you writing this blog.
    Please take care of yourself.
    Hugs
    Carol

  205. Yikes! I’m so sorry about your fall. Looks like it hurts like the dickens but, gosh, your hair and lipstick look fab. 😉 Take care.

  206. Laurel,

This is just to say how much you are valued. I’ll never forget your post about delivering your son and how you keep apologizing the whole time — I laughed so hard because that was me. I’m always telling my husband “well, Laurel says…” I wish you a speedy recovery and much happiness in the years to come.

  207. broken sidewalks are treacherous.
Wishing you strength and a fast recovery .
    Love the lipstick and stitches…
What can we do for you?
    Just let us know…
    Sending healing thoughts …

  208. Something like this really puts stuffy sideboards in perspective, doesn’t it? Thanks for sharing this post. You have given yourself quite an experience, and you may already know what the gift in it is–if not, you soon will. Please continue to take care of yourself in every way that seems right to you. You can never get it done, and you can’t get it wrong.

  209. My darling Laurel, speedy recovery to you. Why everything in life can’t be just pretty without any pain. You look beautiful no matter what… just added some character to your palette. Jokes aside please get well and take care, I love you!!!

  210. Sending you my sincere sympathy. So knowing how you ALWAYS make me laugh with your witty sense of humor, I will try to make you smile with a silly joke and hope smiling doesn’t physically hurt you… I’m not as witty as you, but here goes:

    I broke my finger today….
On the other hand I’m fine.

Please don’t misinterpret as though I’m mocking you or dismissing your injuries. I admire your talents, your humor, writing skills, you as a designer, and willingness to share so much with your readers.

I (we) will be waiting & ready whenever YOU are.

Thank you and I’m so happy you are out of the hospital and recovering.

  211. Laurel, I sincerely hope you get the life you deserve, which includes love, a good balance of work, good health and financial success. You are smart and improve people’s lives with your blogs. You will find the way. Praying for you to have quick healing and an easier path. Now I will go find something to buy from your sales..

  212. I am so so sorry. I can imagine the level of emotional hurt you feel. I suspect vandals even though you haven’t indicated such. I am very happy you had 2 nice people to help you in your most vulnerable condition. It’s very hard to get over. It’s equally inspiring when others go out of their way to help. Give yourself a hug and let close friends and family do what friends and family do.listen huh and help

  213. Wow, Laurel. I am so so sorry this happened to you. Right when you least expect something and then all of a sudden. Please take all the time you need….you are so generous with your blog and are absolutely a delight. I will catch up on all your posts that I have put away for safe keeping so not to worry. Praying that you will feel better ASAP. XoElizabeth Green

  214. Dear Laurel,

Thank you for sharing real life. I’m so sorry this happened yet what grace to have the two Physicians/Angels show up to assist you.

I think you look great despite the swelling and bruising. You have beautiful eyes that sparkle from intelligence and humor.

I’ve been following a few different blogs but the two at the top of my list are yours and Bob Borson’s “Life of an Architect.” Bob used to write a post 3 times a week or was it 5?? Then a few years ago, he scaled it back to twice a week. I think he posts 3 x / month now – not sure.

One thing (and I’m sure you’re well aware of this) I’ve noticed many bloggers do is to invite guest posts by people they respect and admire. I’m sure you don’t want to have to spend much time and energy vetting these people and editing their posts- so there’s the blonde gal at Kaleidoscope who can probably assist. 🙂

And as far as who to have guest post, I have some ideas: Miles Redd! Hoo boy!! , one of your sons, one of your clients (who can share their client perspective on the industry, maybe LuAnn Nigara (or one of her many great speakers), and maybe a prof or Dean from Parsons or NYIAD.

Gosh, these are such great folks, I might start a new blog myself. 😉

On the topic of burn-out, there was a recent article exclaiming how we’re ALL facing and feeling burnt out to some degree.

If anyone can figure out how to solve this problem of maintaining a blog (dependent upon its creator and author) whilst recovering and perhaps traveling. [A traveling design blog/vlog] – Laurel Bern’s Travel Diary ~ a new destination every two weeks…], it’s YOU.

Best wishes for continuing health and prosperity.

    God bless you,
    Tara

  215. Good grief!! That was one heck of a fall! I’m glad you’re alright and in my personal opinion, your stitches look really nice. I hope you feel better soon.

  216. Oh Laurel, I am so so so glad you are basically ok – you’ll be saving on eye makeup for awhile, right? You are an intelligent woman and I’m sure you and your doc will get to the bottom of why it happened and do whatever you need to do to make sure it doesn’t happen again. You were very blessed to have people around who cared enough to stop and help and had the skill to know what to do. Will be praying for your healing.

  217. Oh Laurel,
I am so sorry for your pain. But so grateful that two strangers were there to help you. Your supporters will be barracking for your speedy recovery and, most importantly value you so much, we will wait patiently for you to recover. As for burnout; you know what to do…..lots of sleep, and lots of healing laughter. My gratuitous advice is to laze about as long as it takes, watching tv comedies and YouTube stand up comedy plus even old Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin movies. Do the minimum and rest. Love to you, and eat chocolate. Carole from Australia.

  218. Oh dear Laurel, so sorry to hear this and soooo happy you had angels looking after you. Sending you hugs and healing light.
P.s. You even look fab after a face plant, you lovely creature.

  219. Laurel, Wasn’t it fortuitous that there were knowledgable, kind people there to help when you fell. It’s good to know that you got the care you needed and are already on the road to recovery. I have enjoyed your blog for ever so long and hope that you’ll continue to provide all your wonderful insights, creative ideas, and great sales. Most importantly though I hope you’ll find some moments for yourself to relax and enjoy yourself. Sending my warmest wishes to you. Angela

  220. OMFG! That looks like it hurts! Oweee! You are the strongest of persons, putting it all out there for your many fans and friends. (However the navy ice pack and sky blue mask would work with either the camel coat or the butter ace bandage but not both.) Heal fast …and maybe a little faster with your love army pulling for you!!

  221. So sorry Laurel! Sending love and best wishes. You don’t know how much your humor, creativity, and vision have kept me choosing to read your blog, when there is so much else out there to choose from. Be good to yourself.

  222. Damn girl, how do you still look cute with your face all beat to shit like that! So glad you’re ok. Life is crazy isn’t it. I love your blog. It’s just great and I look forward to seeing it in my email. Thanks for sharing this experience. It just makes you more real for me as a reader if that makes some weird sick kinda sense.

    Cindy

  223. Laurel, So sorry you fell and thankful you had such good care from the moment it happened with 2 doctors helping you! I also fell about a year ago and had kind people come to my aid. Wishing you healing and the much needed rest you deserve in the days ahead.

  224. I just read what everyone wrote above and they said everything I was thinking! As a woman who has done the same thing, I found staying in my jammies for a couple of days and eating not the most nutritious foods really helps, for example, BLT’s, Mac & cheese, pizza, & a couple pints of high quality ice cream will make you feel better sooner and you won’t give a good doode-de!

  225. I love your blog! I am so sorry that you are burned out and hope that you get the rest that you deserve and are refreshed to deliver the clever fun content that makes me read all of your posts. You look quite glamorous in spite of the stitches!!!

  226. Laurel, you have such a sunny disposition. You don’t seem to let things bother you. You look great, love the lipstick, hair looks fabulous (love the color) and you’re very brave to share your photos. You will heal beautifully. We appreciate you so much. You The next time you fall, may it be in love.
    ❤️

  227. I am so sorry. A little rest is needed. Sending you blessings of deep healing. You have had sooo much going on and so many changes … so now a little rest…. so nice to have Angels helping you

  228. Hang in there girl and take care of yourself. You are much appreciated by all on this site. Take a rest and enjoy every minute and let yourself heal.

  229. Laurel, I wish you all the best for a speedy recovery. Don’t push yourself. And thanks for sharing with your devoted readers.

  230. Laurel, I am so very sorry for what you have been going through, but thank goodness for the kindness of strangers and for the expertise of medical staff. I’m glad that you’re feeling better, and I am sending positive thoughts and wishes your way!

  231. Love you, Laurel. In a year with so many who haven’t made it, I’m so glad you survived such a horrible fall. Thanks for sharing, and my husband and I will be praying for your business to thrive, and you a speedy recovery…inside and out. This year has me burning out, too, and I so enjoy your posts in the midst of such sadness.
Absolutely love what you share…every post is like pearls on a string. God bless!

  232. Oh dear, Laurel! Those are some dramatic photos. I’m so sorry that happened. Sending thoughts of calm and healing to you.

  233. Laurel, Your blogs and personality are delightful. Yours is literally the only online advice source I read not related to my own profession — I don’t even do so much as look at FaceBook — just your blog. I have enjoyed your posts and considered several of them crucial for over two years now, ever since I had extensive water damage and the contractors took my kitchen and guest bath down to the dirt. You saved my mental health during that ordeal, gave me the courage to tell the contractor “no,” and the confidence to create a navy blue guest bath (yes, ceilings too), among many other things! Now I am remodeling a water-damaged rent house to sell, and you have been a valued companion to me for several months on that journey. I have quoted you to more than one contractor who thought he had all the answers (including the one who told me my navy blue guest bath would look even smaller), lol, and the current head contractor really appreciated your tutorials on wainscoating and the one on sconces, and he actually took notes! How often does that happen? Please feel no guilt at all for taking a break. You clearly have an amazing work ethic, and it is important to protect it and bolster your mental health. Wishing you a speedy recovery. With kind regards, Monica

  234. I am so sorry this has happened to you. Prayers for a speedy recovery!

PS I would miss your blog posts terribly, but would understand if you skipped one. Just one. Please. Only one 😂

  235. Even the great prophet Elijah experienced exhaustion and burnout, hiding in a cave after the evil woman Jezebel ordered his death, despite his single-handedly slaying 400 Baal prophets. He recovered by sleeping, eating, and sleeping some more. You rest for awhile, seek peace, sleep, eat well and you’ll be back in action in no time. You’ve blessed many through your work and are greatly loved. Prayers your way.

  236. Dear Laurel,
I’m so very sorry to hear about your recent accident requiring ER medical intervention. I hope your physical discomfort will subside soon and your face (nose, bruises and stitches) will gradually heal well. Take good care of yourself. Best wishes ❤🙏

  237. Laurel,
Your column has been an education, a gift and steady companionship. I wish you all the best.
    Your devoted fan,

    Mary

  238. I usually just lurk and bask in your superior taste and wit without posting, Laurel, but I wanted to say take care and best wishes for your full recovery!

  239. So sorry, Laurel! I’ve been dealing with a broken foot and torn ligaments since April (thought I’d skip the bottom two steps just for the fun of it) – I know how quickly something crazy can happen! But your strength and wonderful sense of humor will pull you through! Take care of you and know we’ll all be here whenever you’re feeling better.

  240. A woman after my own heart! A blowout and a little lipstick makes everything so much better. A speedy recovery to you and thank you for your fabulous blog.

  241. So sorry this happened to you. Want to let you know how much I enjoy your posts and how much your expert advice is appreciated. Best wishes for a speedy recovery! I lived on Comm Ave near Mass Ave back in the sixties and am enjoying your mentions of Boston. Your condo is amazing!

  242. I am so sorry this happened to you, Laurel, and I hope you feel better very soon. I love your blog and look forward to each of your posts. But your health is paramount and waiting a bit longer will only make them more special.

  243. Laurel, I’ve read your blog for years and relied on you SO MUCH for advice (I am the Georgia girl with the brick home that you graciously featured a while back; I need to send you an update 🥰)!

The great thing is, if you ever DID take a break from posting, you have such a crazy-good amount of info on your blog that we (and newcomers) would have so much quality content to glean from and amazing guides to purchase!

Praying for a speedy recovery for you, and so thankful that your two angels were there right when you needed them. Funny how that works 💗 💗🙏🏼

  244. Get well soon Laurel. I have learned so much from your blog and really enjoy your brilliant and funny writing style! I refer friends all the time. I hope you can get some rest and find a way to
Heal your burn out. I am glad you were able to buy a lovely home, and enjoy every bit of your journey in remodeling it. Take care

  245. You make a broken nose and facial lacerations look good. I hope you’re feeling better soon, and wish you the best of luck finding a balance that works for your physical and mental well-being.

A tangent – my mom did something similar playing four square with my daughter (turns out 70 year olds should have a few glasses of wine with dinner and then try to keep up with the elementary school set on hard pavement).

  246. I’m so sorry you are having go through this! But yes you were in good hands @ Mass General. My Waltham cousin was a nurse there before she retired. Take care and take it slowly. I so love your blog & everything you do is beautiful.
    🥰😍🥰🤕

  247. Dear Laurel, good grief. I’m so sorry this happened to you. Thank goodness for kind strangers. Sending you healing energy and all good wishes. Take care and be gentle with yourself.

  248. I am so sorry you fell. I fell this summer at 9 am in front of a Bev Mo- face plant, no broken nose like you, or trip to the ER but thought to myself- Please no Captain Obvious advice- I told my husband- It gave new meaning to Trip to the Store- Literally. Best wishes for a speedy recovery- Take care.

  249. Oh my goodness Laurel. Thank heavens you are okay. And how about TWO doctors showing up right when it happened. Don’t you love living in Boston ?! Where else would you be as likely to have two doctors show up at a random crossing?! I’m glad everyone took such good care of you. I can already see that you’re bouncing back. Be well and healthy. Sending good wishes your way.

  250. How scary! You’re still beautiful in spite of the outward injuries. Take good care of of yourself. God bless you, Laurel.

  251. Laurel, I’m so sorry this has happened to you. I hope you are healing and feeling better. But get this straight- you are NOT a so-so interior designer!! You are the real deal!! Your rooms are so beautiful and just wish I could pop up the room you did that I love the most. Strong red and navy colors. Please rest as much as you can.

  252. Laurel, I am so sorry this happened to you and I wish you an amazingly speedy recovery. And if there’s anything practical I can do to help, I hope you will post about it. Sending you my best wishes!

  253. Oh my goodness, you poor dear! How terribly scary and discombulating. I’ve subscribed to your blog for years and it’s the only blog I have ever felt compelled to sign up for. I’ve purchased some products and relied heavily upon your guidance via blog post to decorate my master suite, but never commented before.

However, I just had to reach out and let you know that I am sending good vibes and best wishes your way! Please give yourself permission to prioritize self care, however is best for you. Now, since I can’t exactly drop a casserole in the mail to you, I’m off to click your Amazon link as the next best thing!

  254. I’ve not commented before, but love your posts. Sending healing energy for a speedy recovery and some stress free down time. Namaste.

  255. OK, what are ways that we can help keep your blog afloat? Comment? Click on a link? Or is it only by actually buying something? I certainly will miss you if you post less, but I also want you to get healthier. PS – those stitches look really great, not what you always get in the ER.

  256. OH NO! I’m so sorry about your fall…that could have happened to any of us. I promise, no unsolicited advice. Just know that your faithful readers are here when you are up to posting again.

  257. Please take care of yourself ….your health is the most important thing in life…no if ands or buts!
We love you enjoy you and appreciate you ..starting making You the priority ! Now right now. Not tomorrow Now! We will all be here….we love you. Take care. Get more help sleep later stay off the darn computer enjoy that beautiful apt! Just do it! 😘😘👍🏻👍🏻

  258. I’m so sorry to hear this. I hope you’re feeling better soon. As far as only posting once a month, no problem. Do what you need to do.

  259. Laurel I am all too familiar with your struggle! I fainted and fell regularly when I was pregnant (caused my blood pressure to drop randomly and SMACK down I went) and wanted to hiss at anyone who volunteered advice without knowing the situation, and it was hard to balance wanting time to heal and the fact that if I’m not working, I have no income. What a bear. Hope your healing goes well and the peanut gallery commentary remains at a minimum. May I suggest telling people it’s the latest and greatest face lift technique? Surely there would be room for you to escape in the stunned silence?

  260. I’m so sorry Laurel! Please get well soon! How amazing it is that you had all that help from bystanders, there is still kindness (at least in Boston)! Sending you love and healing wishes from Seattle.

  261. No advice of any kind, just sympathy and best wishes for a speedy recovery and (more importantly) for a solution to the overwork problem!

  262. Laurel, I read your blogs and admire and respect all you do. I wish you well. I will pray for you to heal quickly ,
    Adeline

  263. Oh my gosh!! I’m so glad it wasn’t worse, even though it looks so painful. I am sending you well wishes and healing vibes from Canada.
